Police Identify Mother of "Baby Hope," the Toddler Found in Cooler ...

NYPD Makes New Push to Find 1991 "Baby Hope" Killer

In 1991, Baby Hope was found dead inside a cooler in a wooded area of Washington Heights. In 2013, her cold case has been reopened. Roseanne Colletti has more.

More than two decades after the body of a girl dubbed "Baby Hope"?was discovered inside a cooler dumped in a wooded area in upper Manhattan, police say the child's mother has been found.

Police located the girl's mother, and believe they now know the child's identity, after a woman overheard a conversation in a store amid a?renewed push this summer?to find the toddler's killer.

She contacted police and said she thought she might know the child's sister, now an adult. Detectives then spoke to an aunt of the child, who led them to the mother in Washington Heights.?

The mother was confirmed by a DNA test, police said. Police are not releasing the name of the mother or the child known as "Baby Hope," citing an open murder investigation.

A law enforcement official tells NBC 4 New York that the mother claims she lived in fear of the baby's father and always suspected he had something to do with the girl's disappearance. She was afraid to go to police, she told detectives.

The child, who was believed to be 3 to 5 years old when she died, was found by construction workers on July 23, 1991 along the Henry Hudson Parkway near Dyckman Street. Police say the cooler could have been placed there anytime between July 13, 1991 and July 22, 1991.

She was never reported missing, and reports at the time said she had been starved and sexually abused.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System database lists "Baby Hope" as weighing 25 pounds and being 3 feet, 2 inches tall. She was bound and her hair was in a ponytail with a yellow elastic.

This summer, police canvassed the Inwood and Washington Heights neighborhoods near where she was found, hanging posters and publicizing a $12,000 reward for information leading to the killer.

The New York Times first reported the break in the case late Monday.

Woman Who Allegedly Beats Man To Death With Baseball Bat Is Charged

Credit: KCNC

Credit: KCNC

A family is grappling with grief and confusion after a 42-year-old man was beaten to death with a baseball bat.

"My husband is the most loveable, caring person I know," Denzel Rainey's widow told sister station KCNC.

The woman arrested for the attack, however, allegedly told authorities she beat Rainey because she believed he sexually assaulted a child. She was formally charged Friday.

According to the arrest affidavit, 30-year-old Forsythia Owen told police she grabbed a bat and hunted Rainey down after a child said he had sexually abused her.

Rainey was found Sunday in an alley in the Denver suburb of Englewood. Owen allegedly told police she went to that alley because he slept there, and according to the affidavit detailed her attack on him by swinging her hands "back and forth...demonstrated how she struck Rainey over and over again."

Rainey suffered multiple injuries: skull fracture, six broken ribs, broken left hand and two broken arms.

Lisa Rainey told KCNC that her husband had been homeless due to struggles with alcohol.

?I just don?t know why, what caused her to do this on Denzel, and if Denzel did anything to provoke it,? Lisa Rainey said. ?I need to know the answers for closure for me and closure for my kids.?

Neighbors told KCNC Rainey kept to himself and "never bothered anyone." One woman KCNC spoke with alleged that Owens was the troubled one.

?From my understanding of looking at her, you could tell she was on something,? Veronica Evans said. ?That?s why my little sister and I would stay away from her.?

Owens has been arrested before on assault charges. She's currently being held at the Arapahoe County Detention Center without bond.

Friday, Owens appeared in the Arapahoe County Court and was formally charged with first-degree murder after deliberation and first-degree assault with a deadly weapon. She is expected to enter a plea in December.

It's unknown at this time if a child was sexually assaulted.

How to Find Everything That Moved in iOS 7

iOS 7 is out today and while it might at first look like a new coat of paint, a bunch of things have moved around too. So, before you waste hours trying to figure out how the heck to find everything, here's where everything's moved to.

Get to Spotlight Search with a Swipe

How to Find Everything That Moved in iOS 7

One of the big differences in iOS 7 is how you get to Spotlight Search. It was once located to the left of the home screen and accessible with a swipe. Now, you'll need to swipe down from the middle of the home screen to access it.

Search in Safari from the URL Bar

The search bar in Safari is now gone. So, if you want to search Google, just type your search query into the the URL bar.

Start Private Browsing Sessions in Safari

For the longest time in iOS 7 you had to go all the way into the Settings menu just to initiate a private browsing mode in Safari. Now, just hit the "+" button to open a new tab, and then tap "Private." You'll get the option to close all your open tabs, or keep them open to change them to a private session.

Get the Old Notification Center Back (Sort of)

Notification Center gets a huge overhaul in iOS 7 and things are pretty different. For one, you now have a calendar view showing what's coming up on your calendar, as well as a quick summary of the weather. If you want something closer to the old Notification Center back, you'll need to pop into Settings > Notification Center and change a few things around. Turn off the "Today View," "Today Summary," and "Tomorrow Summary." Then set up your notifications for apps as you'd like.

Get Quick Access to Music Controls in Control Center

How to Find Everything That Moved in iOS 7

In previous versions of iOS you could double-tap the home button and swipe right to get to the music controls. This option is gone now since multitasking works differently. To get to those music options, you'll need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open up Control Center. Likewise, the controls are on your lockscreen all the time, so you don't need to double-tap the home button anymore.

Rearrange Your Music Bar

iOS 7 adds the new iTunes Radio, and in doing so changes the options at the bottom of your Music app. To get it back to your old settings, just open up Music, tap More, and then tap "Edit."

Add Items to Reminders with a Tap

A few of Apple's stock apps have lost their buttons, but the only one where it's a little confusing is Reminders. Now, instead of tapping the "+" button to add a new reminder, you just tap the list itself.

Force Close Apps by Swiping Up

How to Find Everything That Moved in iOS 7

Previously you had to double-tap the home button and then hold down on an icon to get to the area where you could force close apps. Now that multitasking has changed in iOS 7, so force quitting apps has changed as well. Double tap the home button to open up the new multi-tasking area, and then swipe up on the app to force close it.

Hold Down on a Message to Get to the Edit Menu

How to Find Everything That Moved in iOS 7

Messages has had the ability to edit for a while by simply tapping the edit button, but that's been replaced by the "contact" button. To get into edit mode, hold down on a message, and tap more. You can delete select lines of text messages from there.

Access List View in Calendar by Tapping the Magnifying Glass

The List View in the Calendar app has always been a handy way to look at everything you have coming up in one place. That button is gone from Calendar now, but you can access the list view by tapping the magnifying glass in the top right corner.

Cellular Settings Are Now More Accessible (and Useful)

Finally, the Cellular settings menu has moved out of the General section in the Settings. It gets its own tab right underneath Bluetooth, and on top of being able to control your general Cellular settings, you can also edit which apps are allowed to use Cellular data on an app-by-app basis.

Swampscott football team hopes for stronger defensive performance against Winthrop Friday

The Swampscott High Big Blue football team found their offensive groove against St. Mary?s (of Lynn) on Sept. 12, scoring 39 points.

Unfortunately, they gave up 64 points to the Spartans and dropped to 0-2 on the season in the 64-39 loss.

?Hopefully it?s a learning experience for us. We?ll work hard in practice all week and get ready to go on Friday,? quarterback Brendan McDonald said.

Swampscott heads over to Winthrop Friday night, never an easy place to play. The Vikings are coming off a nice 20-6 win over Saugus, and they love to beat the Big Blue.

?We just played two very talented teams, we made improvements from Week 1 to Week 2. We need to make greater improvements heading into Week 3 in Winthrop,? Ben Faulkner said. ?I think it?s going to be a very tough game, but we?re going to be ready for it.?

Swampscott will play league games starting Saturday, Sept. 28 at home against Marblehead. Despite the 0-2 start, the Blue can rip off three or four wins over the next few weeks and, if that happens, they can be smack in the middle of the playoff race.

?Just one game at a time, that?s it. Everybody has to play their game and the wins will come,? Faulkner said.

?Winthrop wants to beat us. They always want to beat us, they?re going to come out flying against us. It?s a big rivalry. The atmosphere there (in Winthrop) is always crazy, so we have to be ready,? McDonald said. ?We have to match them, keep the foot on the gas and come out of there with a win. We can still run the table here and move forward, and surprise a lot of people.?

?It?s a great, long rivalry, we?re both Division 4 teams, and we need this game. It?s a chance for us to play a complete game. We?re not going to see the same size we saw against St. Mary?s, and hopefully the offense can build off the second half and keep moving forward,? head coach Steve Dembowski said. ?That?s the key ? keep moving forward, keep getting better and start winning some games, we control our own destiny.?

Dembowski certainly had no fear of St. Mary?s prior to Friday night.

?We knew they were an excellent team when we put them on the schedule. They?re well-coached, they have good players,? Dembowski said. ?We were going score for score with them, and we almost cut it to a two-score game. We didn?t get in and they came right back, made it a three-score game and that was it.?

There were several highlights for the Blue. Quarterback Brendan McDonald ran for 71 yards and tossed three touchdowns passes. Ben Faulkner scored twice along with TDs from Ryan Cresta, Trevor Kelly and Maleek Newsome. Cresta?s score came on a kickoff return to start the second-half that covered 85 yards.

?We played decent on defense, but we did struggle at times, too. We cut it to 10 points (24-14 on Cresta?s score) right away. It went back and forth in the third, and in the fourth, unfortunately, we didn?t convert one drive,? Dembowski said.

?That was a pretty crazy game. They just kept beating us on defense, we made adjustments and we couldn?t get it to work,? McDonald said. ?We did a lot of good things, we moved the ball, we got a special teams TD, we just didn?t make the stops on defense.?
