West Virginia University officially makes the move to Big 12 Conference

West Virginia University leaders said they were thrilled to be joining the Big 12 Conference in July, but the conference losing the Mountaineers is saying, "not so fast."

WVU president Dr. James Clements and Director of Athletics Oliver Luck joined with Big 12 Commissioner Chuck Neinas and Big 12 board of directors chairman Burns Hargis to announce that the Mountaineers will begin competing in the conference's slate of sports on July 1, 2012.

The move culminates a week of speculation as to whether WVU or Louisville would receive the invitation to replace Missouri, which is expected to announce its departure for the Southeastern Conference soon.

WVU becomes the third school in the Big East to announce it will be leaving the troubled organization. Earlier this football season, both Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced they would be bolting to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Clements said WVU paid the initial $2.5 million buyout fee to the Big East office Friday, adding that another $2.5 million will be paid at a future date. But Big East Commissioner John Marinatto said that wasn't enough.

"West Virginia is fully aware that the Big East Conference is committed to enforcing the 27-month notification period for members who choose to leave the conference," he said in a prepared statement. "We have taken West Virginia's possible departure into account as we have moved forward with our own realignment plans.

"We are confident that in the coming weeks we will complete our own realignment program, adding a number of high-quality members to remain among the top conferences in both football and basketball."

Clements said WVU's intent is "clearly July 1," adding university officials are in discussion with the Big East Conference to resolve the impasse.

"We have been good members of the Big East for a long time," Clements said. "I will leave it at that for now."

WVU has never played a regular season game against a Big 12 Conference school, though it has played Missouri in the Insight.com Bowl in 1998 and Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. The Big 12 Conference formed in 1994 and began competition in 1996 after the eight members of the former Big 8 and four Texas schools which were members of the former Southwestern Conference merged.

Of the nine schools expected to be in the Big 12 Conference in 2012, WVU has played Kansas once (1941), Kansas State twice (1930, 1931), Oklahoma four times, Oklahoma State three times, Texas once (1956), Texas Christian once (1984), and Texas Tech once (1937). Through the history of the WVU program, the team holds a 10-7 record against current member schools.

The move was put on hold earlier this week, as some reports indicated U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, a Louisville alumnus, was lobbying on behalf of his alma mater. Neinas, however, said the delay was caused to allow for discussions as to whether the Big 12 could accommodate an 11th team, should Missouri opt to stay or delay its expected departure.

"I wouldn't be completely honest if I didn't say we felt a little nervous," Luck said. "From our perspective, we felt confident based on our discussions. We were patient and felt very comfortable."

The Mountaineers would play a round-robin schedule in football, meaning they would play each member school once during the season. The Big 12 Conference does not stage a championship game.

"I don't sense any sentiment for the Big 12 to go back to a championship game," Neinas said. "Everybody plays everybody else. There are no byes."

That would leave WVU with only three openings for non-conference opponents. Luck said he would like to see the century-long rivalry with Pittsburgh continue, though he said he has not had discussions with Pitt's athletic leaders.

"We have developed a number of great regional rivalries," he said. "We will see how they will fit in."

Luck also said the impact of the increased travel will have to be resolved, particularly for the sports that rarely travel by airplane. Iowa State is the closest member of the Big 12, and it is nearly 900 miles away.

"In today's BCS geography, there is not a school that doesn't have at least one trip over 1,000 miles," Luck said. "It's no more, no less than many (what) many other institutions (face). We will work hard to minimize the missed class time."

Birds 'at risk' in cold weather

The bird protection charity, the RSPB has warned that as the cold weather kicks in, birds in the UK could struggle to get enough food to survive.

As the days get shorter, birds don't have enough time to look for food.

Snow and ice can make it really hard for them to get to it.

And it's not just food they need.

Water's really important too so they can keep their feathers clean to stay warm through the cold months.

To get people's attention, the RSPB has come up with Feed the Birds Day, this Saturday to encourage people in the UK to get in the habit of leaving food out for our feathered friends.

According to the charity, just leaving out some seeds, nuts and leftover scraps of food could make a real difference to help save birds' lives this winter.

Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup

Halloween is tomorrow, so this week people in the news were trying on costumes and masks, deciding who they want to be. In sports, the St. Louis Cardinals were the ultimate Cinderella, going from 10.5 games behind in late August to World Series champs. In the GOP race, Rick Perry couldn't make up his mind. At first he decided to go retro, donning a Steve Forbes-inspired look as Flat Tax Man. But I guess that wasn't scary enough, so he switched to a more modern -- and much creepier -- mask: Birther Guy. Meanwhile, the Oakland police department apparently has decided to come as Richard Daley's 1968 Chicago police force, with injured Iraq war vet Scott Olsen left looking like the civil rights protesters bloodied on Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge. Lastly, what's the over/under on how many "Sodomized Gaddafi" outfits we'll see tomorrow night? Boo!

House speaker says no more defense cuts (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Speaker John Boehner has a message for the special bipartisan panel looking for ways to cut the deficit: Leave military spending alone.

The Ohio Republican said at a news conference Thursday that projected defense spending has taken more than its "fair share of the hits" in the debt accord reached this past summer.

President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans agreed this summer to cut $350 billion in projected spending over 10 years. The Pentagon is planning cuts of about $450 billion.

The supercommittee has a mandate to come up with at least $1.2 trillion in overall spending cuts over 10 years. If it fails to do so by Nov. 23, or Congress rejects its plan, automatic, across-the-board cuts of $1.2 trillion kick in, with half coming from defense.

Last season, the Nashville Predators?presented a check for $181,000 to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children?s Hospital at Vanderbilt. The biggest portion of that donation, $125,000,?went towards the Nashville Predators Pediatric Cancer Research Fund ? an endowed fund that will always be active and to which others may donate ? with the remaining portion of the donation supporting a number of programs including Beads of Courage, Books From Birth of Middle Tennessee and Flashes of Hope.

Hockey Fights Cancer?is a joint initiative created by the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players Association which honors those in the hockey community who have struggled, or continue to struggle with the disease. This year the NHL gave all 30 teams $5,000 to go toward a cancer charity of their choice; the Nashville Predators selected Children?s Hospital.? The goal of?Hockey Fights Cancer?is to raise money and awareness for national and local organizations involved in cancer care and research.

Economy grew 2.5 pct. in Q3 as consumers rebound

(AP) ? The U.S. economy grew modestly over the summer after nearly stalling in the first six months of the year, lifted by stronger consumer spending and greater business investment.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that the economy expanded at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the July-September quarter. That's the stronger growth in a year and nearly double the 1.3 percent growth in the April-June quarter. It's also a vast improvement over the anemic 0.9 percent growth for the entire first half of the year.

While 2.5 percent growth is enough to ease recession fears, it's far below what's needed to lower painfully high unemployment, which has been near 9 percent for the past two years. Analysts project similar growth for the October-December quarter.

Nonetheless, the report on U.S. gross domestic product, or GDP, sketched a more optimistic picture for an economy that only two months ago seemed destined for another recession. And it was delivered on the same day that European leaders announced a deal that marked a turning point in their two-year debt crisis.

Stocks surged on the European deal and maintained their gains after the report on U.S. growth was released.

"This has been a morning of encouraging news," said Jennifer Lee, a senior economist for BMO Capital Markets. "The fourth quarter may see some pullback in U.S. economic growth ... but the positive details underlying the GDP report should help ease fears of a U.S. recession..somewhat."

Consumers helped drive much of the growth. They spent at an annual rate of 2.4 percent ? more than triple the rate in the spring. They bought more cars, furniture and clothing.

Households also increased their spending on services by the most in more than five years. Spending on services rose a solid 3 percent. Much of the gain was because they spent more on health care and to cool their homes during an unseasonably hot summer.

Still, Americans spent more even though they made less money. Their after-tax incomes adjusted for inflation fell at a rate of 1.7 percent in the summer, the biggest decline since the third quarter of 2009 ? just as the recession was ending.

Economists believe that growth in consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity, will be restrained until incomes start growing at healthier levels, which is unlikely until hiring picks up.

"Households funded their extra consumption by running down their saving rate," said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist for Capital Economics, who predicts growth will cool off in the fourth quarter and next year.

Businesses also helped boost third-quarter growth by stepping up their investment in equipment and software. That category surged 17.4 percent ? nearly three times the rate from spring. They also invested more in new buildings, a sign that some could be expanding despite the sluggish economy.

The GDP report measures the country's total output of goods and services. It covers everything from bicycles to battleships, as well as services such as haircuts and doctor's visits.

In August, many thought the economy was destined for another recession after the government said growth fell to less than 1 percent for the first six months of the year. High gas prices, the growing debt crisis in Europe and wild fluctuations in the stock market also contributed to those fears, which have receded in recent weeks after reports showed improvements in hiring and consumer spending.

Economists project growth in the range of 2.5 percent to 3 percent for the October-December quarter and for all of next year ? just enough to keep the unemployment rate from rising.

For the 14 million people who are out of work and want jobs, that's discouraging news. And it's an ominous sign for President Barack Obama, who will be facing voters next fall.

There have been some encouraging signs.

A measure of business investment plans rose in September for the second straight month and by the most in six months, according to a government report Wednesday on orders for longer-lasting manufactured goods.

And consumers stepped up their spending on retail goods in both July and September. The main reason for the September gain was more people bought new cars, a purchase people typically make when they are confident in their finances.

Economists warned that even their modest assessment of growth of around 2.7 percent for next year will fall short if the European debt situation does not get resolved. And the outlook could dim further if U.S. lawmakers allow a Social Security tax cut and extended unemployment benefits to expire at the end of this year.

Forget Washington: America's Pragmatic Caucus is Creating Jobs (Time.com)

Amid the throes of the summer's heated and bitterly partisan debates over the federal debt, President Obama channeled the frustrations of most Americans when he remarked that they voted for divided government, not dysfunctional government. Since then, it appears this dysfunction is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

But it would be foolhardy to confuse the health of the debate in our nation's capital with that of the country as a whole, or the vitality of our federal government with that of our federal republic.

In fact, we find America ? or, more precisely, our states, cities and metropolitan areas ? awash in leadership and increasingly governed by a Pragmatic Caucus of political, business, university and civic leaders. In sharp contrast to Beltway polarization, these leaders are acting decisively to grow jobs in the near term and retool their metropolitan economies for the long-haul. (See how the jobs bill vote proved congressional dysfunction.)

The rise of a Pragmatic Caucus at a time of federal inaction reflects the genius of American democracy. The U.S. is not just the federal government. It is also a union of states, and perhaps more importantly, a network of cities and metropolitan areas.

States matter constitutionally, sharing responsibility for shaping the economy, safeguarding the environment and caring for our most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Cities and metros dominate economically as they concentrate and agglomerate the innovative firms, talented workers, risk-taking entrepreneurs and supportive ecosystems of universities, community colleges and business associations that drive modern economies.

Members of the Pragmatic Caucus share common ground even if they have different political or ideological leanings. They are close to the ground, and prize place over party, collaboration over conflict and solution over dogma. They form what Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter likes to call the "Get Stuff Done" party. (See why Obama's actions don't always live up to his words.)

Mayors, not surprisingly, are charter members of the Pragmatic Caucus, since so many duties of local office ? from providing basic services to regenerating blighted neighborhoods to preparing for and responding to natural disasters like Hurricane Irene ? require practical rather than political solutions and demand leaders who are hungry for results and impatient with ideological grandstanding.

The current cast of U.S. mayors ? both Republicans and Democrats ? is one of the best in modern memory. But the Pragmatic Caucus extends far beyond elected officials to include enterprising presidents of major universities, major philanthropic leaders and the heads of influential metropolitan business organizations.

Governors, too, are getting the message about metropolitan power. Colorado, New York and Tennessee, for example, have all initiated state economic development strategies that intentionally build upon and align with the distinctive strategies of each state's cities, counties and metropolitan areas. This is not surprising since the Governors of these states are all either former Mayors or individuals with deep experience with urban issues. Others, like Rick Snyder of Michigan, have brought deep business backgrounds and a focus on tangible results and short-term deliverables.

US insists operation in Africa a limited mission (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Obama administration officials insist the U.S. military operation against a ruthless guerrilla group in central Africa is a limited deployment with the specific goal of ending the threat of the Lord's Resistance Army.

Officials from the State and Defense departments on Tuesday faced skeptical members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Republicans and Democrats generally backed President Barack Obama's decision to send 100 troops as advisers in the battle against the group and its leader, Joseph Kony. But they worried about an open-ended commitment that could involve more American forces.

The officials said the Lord's Resistance Army is weakened but Kony and top commanders remain at large and continue ordering the group's members to commit atrocities.

Officials said the goal is to capture or kill Kony and his commanders.

Create a Wi-Fi Challenge Question, Scare Off Leeches, and Other Clever SSIDs That Send a Message [Evil Week]

Create a Wi-Fi Challenge Question, Scare Off Leeches, and Other Clever SSIDs That Send a MessageYour Wi-Fi network's name (called your SSID) identifies your router so you know which network to connect to, but considering how often smartphones pop up connection notifications, your network's name can also act as a medium for delivering messages to fellow Wi-Fi users?or even scare passersby off an open network.

I've covered the topic of using your wireless router's SSID name to just plain harass your neighbors, and we've even suggested using it to discourage neighbors from leeching your Wi-Fi, but what if you don't want to be a jerk for no reason?

In addition to changing your Wi-Fi to something scary such as "IllegalActivity" or "ISeeWhatYouAreDoing" in order to scare off people from leeching onto your network, you can also use it to send a message. "Apt112IHaveYourMail" can tell people to come to you to get their mis-delivered mail (though why you wouldn't just put it into their mailbox is beyond me). "TurnDownYourMusicPlease" is useful for considerate neighbors that don't know their sound is bleeding into your space?but not useful for those who don't care.

You could also turn your Wi-Fi network name into a challenge question that your friends would know the answer to, the answer to which would act as your password. For example, "NameOfMyFirstPet", "AdamsHighSchoolMascot", and so on, and save yourself the trouble of having to deliver your password to everyone on the planet. (They clearly wouldn't be the most secure passwords on the planet.)

Other messages like "PartyNextFriday303PleaseAttend" is cooler (though maybe less effective) than going door to door and slipping a printout in the crack, and "LostDogCall2125551234" is pretty self-explanatory.

If you're really intent on causing problems for jerky neighbors, options like "DogAbuseIn411" can deliver your messages of harassment with very little effort.

Probably the most evil thing you could try: Change your SSID to the name of your neighbor's Wi-Fi. If you could manage to program your DD-WRT router to log incorrect login attempts (this script and this page on brute force attacks are the closest we could find), you could in theory capture your neighbor's Wi-Fi password, then subsequently leech off their internet.

Of course, we trust you wouldn't do that anyway. Got a clever SSID usage of your own? Let's hear it in the comments.

Lifehacker's Evil Week is all about topics such as password cracking, social hacking and other questionable tricks to make sure you're in the know. Knowledge is power, and whether you use that power for good or evil is in your hands.

Official: Gadhafi's son nearing Niger border (AP)

DAKAR, Senegal ? Moammar Gadhafi's son and one-time heir apparent is now believed to be heading toward the West African nation of Niger, where his brother and dozens of Gadhafi regime members already have sought refuge, a government official said Tuesday.

Rissa ag Boula, an adviser to Niger's president and an elected member of the regional council of Agadez, told The Associated Press that he was in touch with the ethnic Tuaregs who are helping guide Seif al-Islam Gadhafi. The ethnic Tuaregs were among Gadhafi's strongest supporters and fought to keep him in power.

"If he comes here, the government will accept him, but the government will also need to respect its international obligations. It's up to him to decide (whether to stay on the run or come to Niger)," Boula said.

Boula said that Seif al-Islam, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, appeared to be poised to cross into Algeria in order to make his way to Niger. It would be the same route that his brother al-Saadi Gadhafi and more than 30 other Gadhafi loyalists had used in September.

Niger's government has said that members of the Gadhafi regime seeking refuge in the West African nation will not be turned back to Libya without guarantees for their safety.

Al-Saadi Gadhafi and several others considered key regime figures have been placed under house arrest in Niger's capital in a gated compound. The others are also under surveillance but are allowed to leave their villas, Niger's government said.

Unlike his brother who is already in Niger, Seif al-Islam is one of two surviving regime figures that is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity committed during Libya's protracted battle for power.

Because of its large Tuareg population, Niger was among the last countries to recognize the country's new leaders. Mosques and hotels throughout Niger were built by Gadhafi and he remains deeply popular in the nation, making it a natural sanctuary for fleeing members of his inner circle.

Michael Jackson Begged Nurse For Propofol

'Nobody who cared or had your best interest at heart is going to give you this,' Cherilyn Lee recalls telling MJ.
By Gil Kaufman and Kara Warner

Former Michael Jackson nurse Cherilyn Lee testifies
Photo: Paul Buck-Pool/ Getty Images

The second day of testimony from defense witnesses in the involuntary manslaughter trial of former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray included claims by one of the singer's former nurses that MJ demanded she provide him with the surgical anesthetic propofol.

The Witnesses
» Cherilyn Lee, nurse practitioner
» Brandon Phillips, president and CEO of AEG Live
» Michael Henson, toxicologist and technical operations officer for Pacific Toxicology

Key Testimony: » Nurse/ holistic medicine practitioner Cherilyn Lee testified that Jackson became frustrated with her attempts to treat his insomnia with natural remedies such as herbal teas and vitamins, insisting that only a propofol-like drug could work. Initially open to her suggestions, Lee said Jackson became "upset" as time went on and repeatedly asked for her to give him propofol. Her testimony came a day after Jackson's longtime internist, Allan Metzger, testified that during the same period just before his death, Jackson had also asked him for intravenous anesthetic to help his insomnia. Lee had never heard of propofol, but after looking it up, she said she warned Jackson not to use it.

» Lee's testimony was briefly halted after she complained of feeling dizzy and burst into tears in the courtroom hallway; she returned to the stand a short time later. Reading from Lee's record, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren asked if she recalled telling Jackson, "Nobody who cared or had your best interest at heart is going to give you this." She said she did.

» Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor dealt a blow to the defense when he barred testimony about Jackson's contractual obligations to This Is It concert promoter AEG Live. Pastor said the details could potentially distract the jurors, despite arguments from Murray's defense team that the 42-page document would show that the singer was under tremendous financial pressure to pull off the 50-concert comeback series in London. Defense attorney Ed Chernoff said in court that if Jackson had been unable to perform, he would have to repay more than $30 million at a time when he was $400 million in debt.

» Phillips' testimony centered on his experience with Jackson during the meetings and rehearsals for the This Is It series of concerts, at which Jackson insisted he be allowed to bring Murray to care for him personally.

» Phillips recalled Jackson being disconnected and distracted and that the show's choreographer, Kenny Ortega, suggested to him in an email that he consider canceling the shows due to Jackson's seemingly questionable health. Phillips said Jackson addressed those concerns during a meeting between himself, Ortega, Jackson and manager Frank DiLeo, during which Jackson told Ortega the show must go on. "You build the house and I'll put on the door and paint it," Phillips recalled Jackson saying to Ortega.

» Henson took the stand briefly to describe his background in toxicology and his area of expertise in the area of drug testing and providing information to various defense attorneys before the judge called for the day's adjournment. Testimony will resume at 9 a.m. PT on Wednesday.

Murray, who was being paid $150,000 a month to care for Jackson, had pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of involuntary manslaughter and is now facing four years in prison. But new sentencing laws in California aimed at mandatorily reducing state prison overcrowding mean that, as a nonviolent offender with no prior record, he could be sentenced to county jail instead. If that is the case, his sentence could be reduced to two years and, because of overcrowding in the Los Angeles County jail, he may be allowed to serve the majority of his time under supervised house arrest.

That hasn't always been the case with similar DIY attempts (for obvious reasons), but the team behind the so-called Cygnus "spacecraft" decided to go all out when they sent their weather balloon / beer cooler contraption aloft this month to photograph the curvature of the Earth. In this case, going all out meant sending a Nikon D300s DSLR equipped with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens, which manged to capture some stunning pictures like the one you see above -- although some got a bit obscured by ice build-up. There's more where that came from at the Flickr link below, and you can check out a video of the launch after the break.

[Thanks, Udi]

(AP) ? The European Union will require banks to raise their capital buffers to higher levels by 2012, much earlier than required, France's president said Sunday, signaling one element of a broader plan to finally get a grip on Europe's escalating debt crisis.

Nicolas Sarkozy, who was speaking after a summit of the 27 EU leaders in Brussels, said the capital buffers that banks have to achieve under the Basel III rules by 2019 will already be obligatory for big EU banks as of next year.

He did not say how much money banks will have to raise as a result of the anticipation of the rules, but a European official said Saturday that they would force banks to find just over euro100 billion ($140 billion) ? either through issuing new shares, selling off assets or asking their governments for help.

EU leaders were reluctant to unveil details of the new bank rules until they have other parts of their rescue plan in place, especially a decision on how to boost the firepower of their bailout fund.

They also have to find a solution for Greece's massive debt problem. Negotiations with banks to take losses on their bond holdings were only advancing slowly, but leaders have promised a full-fledged plan in time for a second summit on Wednesday. A report from Greece's debt inspectors has suggested that the value of the bonds may need to be reduced as much as 60 percent.

"It is a comprehensive package and the recapitalization of the banks, getting a lasting solution to the Greek debt, and what we call the leveraging of the European Financial Stability Facility are the three main parts of that package," said EU President Herman Van Rompuy, who chaired the discussions of the 27 EU leaders. "We are confident that we will get an agreement on Wednesday. Otherwise we would not take a decision on recapitalization of the banks on Wednesday."

Weaker countries such as Italy and Spain did not want to fully approve the requirement for banks to shore up their rainy-day funds unless they know for sure that they can get help from the European Financial Stability Facility, if necessary.

But Europe is quickly running out of time, with turmoil on financial markets worsening since the summer. The longer leaders put off important decisions, the less trust investors and even citizens have in their ability to achieve results.

"Greece has proven again and again that we are making the necessary decisions to make our economy sustainable, and make our economy more just," said Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, whose country has undergone more than a year of painful austerity after being frozen out of bond markets. "The crisis is a European crisis, so now is the time that we as Europeans need to act decisively and effectively."

Cherington likely to replace Epstein in Boston

By JIMMY GOLEN

updated 11:20 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2011

BOSTON - Ben Cherington will have plenty to do if, as expected, he follows Theo Epstein as the general manager of the Boston Red Sox.

He'll also have plenty to work with.

Cherington is expected to be promoted on Tuesday, when the Red Sox have scheduled a news conference to introduce Epstein's replacement. Epstein resigned from Boston to take over as president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs on Friday, and the teams said they would hold off on more announcements out of respect for the teams in the World Series; Tuesday is the next off-day.

Cherington's first job will be to find a manager to replace Terry Francona, a two-time World Series winner who admitted he lost the clubhouse in his eighth season and was let go after the team's unprecedented September collapse. The coaching staff also will need to be rebuilt as pitching coach Curt Young left for the Oakland Athletics earlier Friday.

Cherington also will have to deal with the fallout from the team's 7-20 September that left it one game short of the playoffs. The pitching staff disintegrated over the final month, followed by news reports that several starters were drinking beer and eating fast-food fried chicken in the clubhouse during games.

Among them was John Lackey, who was 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA in the second year of a five-year, $82.5 million deal. The Red Sox are unlikely to find a taker unless they eat most of Lackey's remaining salary. Cherington also will be saddled with six more years of Carl Crawford's contract, a seven-year, $142 million deal signed by Epstein.

But the Red Sox have reason to be hopeful with the core of the team that went 81-43 over a 4?-month stretch of the season and a payroll that is among the biggest in baseball. All-Star Adrian Gonzalez just finished the first year of a seven-year, $154 million deal, Jacoby Ellsbury developed into an MVP candidate, and Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis are locked up long term.

Josh Beckett was an ace for most of the year and Jon Lester remains one of the top lefties in the AL, but their performance in September was a key reason for the collapse. Clay Buchholz is expected to return from a stress fracture.

J.D. Drew's contract is up, giving the Red Sox some payroll flexibility, and Daisuke Matsuzaka is at the end of the six-year deal that brought him over from Japan for a total of $103 million.

They'll need the money to re-sign closer Jonathan Papelbon, who can file for free agency for the first time, and for designated hitter David Ortiz, who's also a free agent.

Because Epstein's move was in the works for a while, Cherington has been filling in as GM since the regular season ended.

Cherington also served as co-GM during the three-month period after the 2005 season when Epstein walked away from the Red Sox. He shared the job with Jed Hoyer. Now the San Diego Padres' GM, Hoyer is expected to be Epstein's top hire with the Cubs.

Because the teams were unable to agree to compensation for allowing Epstein out of the last year of his contract, Hoyer and Cherington will probably have to work on that, too.

Sparks in Your Sleep

Inspiration often seems to pop up unpredictably?in the shower, on a long walk or even at the grocery store. But one place I never expect it is during sleep. I tend to think of myself as a computer: at bedtime I power myself down with teeth brushing and pillow fluffing, and soon enough my brain switches off.

That analogy, however, is dead wrong. Your sleeping brain has simply entered an alternative mode of thinking, as psychologist Deirdre Barrett writes in ?Answers in Your Dreams.? With your eyes closed and limbs immobilized, your brain spins fanciful webs of ideas that your waking mind might have filtered out. In that rich environment, your creativity and problem-solving skills can blossom.

You can even sometimes steer the course of a dream. Along with the high entertainment value of, say, suddenly gaining the ability to fly, this control could prove useful for overcoming anxiety and other troubles, as psychologist Ursula Voss explains in ?Unlocking the Lucid Dream.?

Dreaming is not the only state the brain inhabits outside the boundaries of our awareness. Even when you sit quietly doing nothing, your brain bustles with activity. Groups of neurons continue to fire unbidden, forming patterns of activity that neuroscientists are now using to produce stunning maps of the mind. Scientific American Mind?s Ann Chin and I collaborated to bring you ?Head Shots.?

As you take in those colorful images, reflect for a moment on the marvel of your eyes?another example of how the brain works behind the scenes. When your eyes focus, they do not zero in on one spot: they actually dart around, using tiny subconscious movements called microsaccades. These motions keep your vision healthy, but they can also reveal your hidden desires, as Susana Martinez-Conde and Stephen L. Macknik write in ?Shifting Focus.? Paradoxically enough, although we strive?and sometimes manage?to control our thoughts and actions, our brain often seems to have a mind of its own.

A new discipline emerges: The psychology of science

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? You've heard of the history of science, the philosophy of science, maybe even the sociology of science. But how about the psychology of science? In a new article in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science, San Jose State University psychologist Gregory J. Feist argues that a field has been quietly taking shape over the past decade, and it holds great promise for both psychology and science.

"Science is a cognitive act by definition: It involves personality, creativity, developmental processes," says Feist -- everything about individual psychology. So what is the psychology of science? "Simply put," he writes, it is "the scientific study of scientific thought and behavior." The psychology of science isn't just about scientists, though. It's about how children make organized sense of the world, what comprises scientific talent and interest -- or growing disinterest -- and even people's embrace of pseudoscience.

Reviewing about two dozen articles, Feist mentions work in many psychological subspecialties. Neuroscientists have observed the brain correlations of scientific reasoning, discovering, for instance, that people pay more attention to data that concur with their own personal theories. Developmental psychologists have found that infants can craft theories of the way the world works. They've also looked at the ages at which small children begin to distinguish theories from evidence.

In its focus on such processes as problem-solving, memory, and creativity, cognitive psychology may be the most mature of the specialties in its relationship to the doing of science. Feist's own work in this area offers some intriguing findings. In meta-analyses of personality studies of scientific interest and creativity, he has teased out a contradiction: People who are highly interested in science are higher than others in "conscientiousness" (that is, such traits as caution and fastidiousness) and lower in "openness" to experience. Meanwhile, scientific creativity is associated with low conscientiousness and high openness.

Feist believes that a new psychology of science is good for science, which has become more and more important to society, culture, and the economy. Educators need to understand the ways children and adolescents acquire the requisites of scientific inquiry, he says, "and we want to encourage kids who have that talent to go that way."

But the new sub-discipline is also good for psychology. "Like other disciplines, psychology is fracturing into smaller and smaller areas that are isolated from each other," he says. "The psychology of science is one of the few recent disciplines that bucks that trend. We're saying: 'Let's look at the whole person in all the basic psychological areas -- cognition, development, neuroscience -- and integrate it in one phenomenon.' That's an approach which is unusual these days."

FDA Probe Points To Cantaloupe Packing Plant As Source Of Listeria

Ed Andrieski/AP

Owner Eric Jensen examines cantaloupe on the Jensen Farms near Holly, Colo., last month.

The Jensen Farms cantaloupe blamed for the deadliest listeria outbreak in years may have become contaminated in the farm's own packing facilities.

That's the conclusion of the FDA's investigation into the source of the outbreak so far, although the saga is far from over.

And once again, the likely culprit is poop.

?

In a conference call with reporters today, FDA's Sherri McGarry says the agency's tests of cantaloupes growing in the fields were negative. Same for some samples collected in the packing facility, although she noted they were collected after the equipment had been thoroughly cleaned.

Listeria bacteria were found on some of the fruit in cold storage and some equipment, but not in the water used to wash the cantaloupes. (Read the full inspection report here.)

But where did the bacteria come from? A farm truck used to haul cantaloupes to a cattle facility ? increasing the risk of contamination via animal feces ? is one possibility.

Also, Magary says, the packing facility has a floor that allows water to pool and contains equipment previously used on another crop ? potatoes ? that wasn't "easily cleanable and sanitized." And, the packing facility is open to the air.

She added that there is no reason to believe these practices are widespread in the industry.

Jensen Farms is currently not operating and has agreed to allow government inspectors to inspect it before reopening. It initiated a recall Sept. 14.

FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg says she hopes the listeria investigation will lead to better prevention of foodborne illnesses in the future - a mantra the agency has been repeating since the first reports came out last month.

As of yesterday, the outbreak has been blamed for at least 25 deaths and 123 illnesses in 26 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. While the casualties have slowed since September, they still may creep up, given the long incubation period of listeria, officials say.

Still, not everyone who was exposed got sick, and our own Allison Aubrey reported on why that is recently.

Stay tuned for more on the listeria outbreak tonight on All Things Considered.

Theft of Obama audio truck probed in Virginia (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Authorities are investigating the theft of a truck that a Virginia television station said held President Barack Obama's teleprompter and other speaking equipment.

WWBT in Richmond said a truck holding a portable sound system, presidential seals and other equipment was stolen from the parking lot of a hotel in Chesterfield, Va., about 100 miles south of Washington.

The vehicle was recovered in the parking lot of another hotel on Monday afternoon, WWBT reported on its website, citing sources. It put the value of the equipment at about $200,000.

The Defense Information Systems Agency, which provides communications support for the president and other officials, said a government vehicle had been stolen and recovered.

"No classified or sensitive information was in the vehicle," it said in an e-mailed statement.

"We take incidents such as this very seriously, and a formal investigation is continuing in coordination with relevant law enforcement agencies."

A DISA spokeswoman declined to give more details. A spokesman for the Henrico County police was not available to comment.

Obama is on a bus tour of North Carolina and Virginia in an effort to get his jobs plan through Congress. He is scheduled to speak in North Chesterfield, Virginia on Wednesday.

Nokia 800 press shots leak, Espoo's Windows Phone Mango lovechild now close at hand

Stephen Elop famously fumbled when shots of Nokia's "super confidential" Mango handset made their way to the interwebs. Since then, we've seen footage from the factory floor, and even teases of upcoming marketing materials outing the 800, or the phone formerly known as Sea Ray. Now, leaked press shots over on PocketNow, once again, treat us to a preview of the Espoo / Redmond mobile marriage and its candybar-shaped offspring -- available in blue, pink and black. From what we can see in these renders, the volume rocker, power button and apparent dedicated camera shortcut key are all placed on the right side of the handset, with a speaker grille located at the device's base. Of course, there's that familiar Windows Phone 7.5 live-tiled interface and three capacitive buttons on the handset's screen. For now, that's all she wrote, but is it enough to tide you over 'til its eventual reveal at Nokia World? Our trusty magic 8-balls says, "You may rely on it." We're inclined to agree.
