5 Reasons Why Syria Isn’t Libya: Analysis

As Syria?s bloody uprising continues into its second year, there?s a growing realization that President Bashar Hafez al-Assad just might outlast the rebels. While many had hoped that al-Assad would soon go the way of Libya?s Muammar Gaddafi, it?s clear that even if it happens, his departure won?t be so swift.

There are a number of reasons why Syria?s Assad has stuck around, and why some people are even predicting the Syrian strongman may ultimately prevail. Here are the top five ways that Syria is no Libya.

Russian Weapons: Like Syria, Libya relied heavily on importing arms from Russia, using weapons systems such as the Soviet-designed T-72 battle tank and Su-22 aircraft. But in March 2011, Russia finally sided with the international community asking for Gaddafi to step down, which ended the Russian arms pipeline to Libya. That decision ultimately cost Russia billions of dollars in arms sales, which may be why Moscow decided not to repeat the same mistake twice. In Syria, the flow of Russian weapons goes on, much to the consternation of the United States. Russia has pledged continuing support to the Assad regime, and has even made recent arms deliveries to the country.

Intelligence Service: Syria?s Mukhabarat intelligence service is one of the most ruthless in the Middle East, eliciting fear and even paranoia among the local population. Some estimates claim that as much as 20 percent of the population is on the intelligence service?s payroll. (As in other authoritarian states, the truth of the number may not matter; what matters is that people believe it.) Syria has effectively used the Mukhabarat to keep tabs on the insurgency and to limit its effectiveness by arresting leaders?even kidnapping them from Lebanon in some cases.

Realistic President: Muammar Gaddafi was smart?you can?t hold on to power for decades without cunning. But he was also delusional, believing, perhaps until the very end, that his people loved and admired him. Assad may harbor some elements of self-delusion, but he clearly knows the extent of unrest in Syria. In fact, Assad, who was educated in the United Kingdom, is well-informed on the importance of social media; according to leaked emails, he regularly discusses coverage of events posted on YouTube and Facebook. And at this point, he probably knows his choices are down to clinging to power and trying to weather the storm or facing an end like Gaddafi?s.

Strong Military: Although there have been defections from the Syrian military, so far the rebels in Syria don?t have the equivalent of the Free Libyan Army (later renamed the National Liberation Army). That group, though it was a ragtag resistance force, could fight a conventional military. Syrian rebels, by contrast, aren?t so organized. Even when rebels take over neighborhoods or towns, the Syrian army has been able to roll back those gains. The rebels have formed a military council based in Paris but don?t yet appear to have any formal military hierarchy within Syria.

Iranian Support: Gaddafi was largely isolated from the international community before the collapse of his regime, but Assad still has a couple of stalwart supporters. Iran?s leaders, like Russia?s, have refused to join international condemnation of Assad, promising to stand by their man in Damascus. While Russia supplies Syria with weapons, Iran, a major player in the region, is allegedly providing surveillance assistance, helping the Assad regime keep tabs on the opposition.

Dating Violence Common by 7th Grade: Survey - Domestic Violence ...

HealthDay News
by By Alan Mozes
HealthDay Reporter
Updated: Mar 30th 2012

new article illustration

THURSDAY, March 29 (HealthDay News) -- Psychological and physical abuse is a common facet of dating for America's adolescents, a new survey reveals.

Researchers who polled more than 1,400 seventh graders found that more than 37 percent of 11- to 14-year olds had been the victim of some form of psychological violence, and almost one in six said they had fallen prey to physical violence while in an ongoing relationship.

"Issues of dating abuse among young teens are much more pervasive than I imagine many families believe," said Peter Long, president and CEO of Blue Shield of California Foundation, which co-sponsored the survey with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the organization Futures Without Violence.

Long said he was startled to see that three-quarters of the students reported they had a boyfriend or girlfriend by their middle-school years.

"That's a big number, and it means that this is the age when many kids are forming their views of what it is to have a relationship," Long said. This indicates that this is the appropriate age to intervene, he added, saying, "High school may even be too late."

The finding that 31 percent of these middle school kids is "experiencing some kind of electronic aggression or pressure such as provocative or insistent texting should be a warning sign for us," Long said, "as is the fact that 15 percent have experienced some kind of physical abuse while dating."

According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention questionnaires, 10 percent of American high school students say they have been physically abused by their boyfriend or girlfriend. But clear insight regarding younger teens has been less well investigated, the researchers said.

To address that issue, between 2010 and 2012 surveys were conducted in eight middle schools in five U.S. cities: Los Angeles; Bridgeport, Conn.; Indianapolis; San Diego, and Saginaw, Mich.

The average age of the 1,430 students polled was 12, and boys and girls were equally represented. About one-quarter were white; 30 percent, black; 34 percent, Hispanic and 12 percent were a combination of other races.

The survey defined teen dating violence as any form of physical, sexual or emotional violence occurring within the context of dating. Psychological violence includes controlling behaviors, such as not allowing a girlfriend or boyfriend to do things with other people. Electronic violence covers bullying and name-calling online or via texts, and physical violence includes pushing, grabbing or kicking one's partner.

Asked about these and other behaviors in the previous six months:

  • Thirty-seven percent said that they had seen boys or girls being physically abusive towards their dating partner. About one-quarter had a male or female friend who was physically violent to a partner, and more than 20 percent had a friend whose partner was physically violent to him or her.
  • Forty-nine percent said they had been sexually harassed, either physically or verbally, by being touched inappropriately or joked about.
  • Seven percent strongly agreed that it was okay for a boy to hit his girlfriend under certain circumstances, such as "a girl who makes her boyfriend jealous on purpose." Interestingly, 50 percent strongly agreed that it was OK for a girl to hit her boyfriend in the same siutation.
  • Sixty-three percent agreed with what the pollsters considered a "harmful stereotype" about gender, such as "girls are always trying to get boys to do what they want" or "With boyfriends and girlfriends, boys should be smarter than girls."

"But the good news," Long said, "is that nearly three-quarters of the students reported that in the last six months they have talked to their parents about dating. Not necessarily about dating abuse, but about dating. Which means the door is open for parents to talk to their children about relationships. So, on the one hand we have real serious issues here. But, on the other hand, we also have a real opportunity for parents to engage."

A California mother of two, Alexandra Preston, 35, encourages parents of teens to take the survey findings to heart.

"There's a tendency to read about a study like this and think, 'That can't be true.' Because we want our kids to be safe and happy, and we don't want it to be true, right?"

"But I think it's important that parents acknowledge that understanding and establishing and respecting boundaries is something all of us have to struggle with throughout life, at every age," said Preston, who added that she herself was a victim of domestic violence in a prior marriage.

Preston, whose children are 13 and 10, is finance and operations manager for a non-profit agency that works with Robert Wood Johnson's Start Strong program, which aims to combat dating abuse in middle school. She said her own experiences have led her to be proactive with her children regarding healthy relationships.

Her son "remembers what happened in our home," she said, explaining she tries "to make sense of it, without demonizing the people who do it, and making sure they know it's not their fault."

Preston said this study could be helpful in raising awareness about dating issues, and encouraging parents to listen to their children.

An international forum for communication and collaboration across clinical and academic fields concerned with obsessive-compulsive disorders

Oxford -- Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and solutions, is pleased to announce the launch of a new quarterly journal, Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders. The first issue of the journal is now available online.

Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) have intrigued those in the medical and mental health fields for as long as the disorders were first identified by Freud over a century ago. Although crucial advances in understanding and treating OCD have been made over the past half century, important questions remain unanswered regarding the causes of OCD, its true nature, and its boundaries with other seemingly similar mental disorders. Examples are that OCD in elderly and the very young are not well understood, nor do we know how they are influenced by ethnic and cultural factors or how these disorders can be prevented? How can we improve on existing treatments? These and other issues are addressed in the Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders.

Prof. Jonathan S. Abramowitz of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Editor-in-Chief of the journal said of the launch, "As the founding Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders, my vision for the journal is to create an international and interdisciplinary forum to foster communication and collaboration across the various clinical and academic fields concerned with Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD)."

The Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders publishes high quality research and clinically-oriented articles dealing with all aspects of obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and related conditions (obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders: e.g. trichotillomania, hoarding, body dysmorphic disorder).

Manchester City stumbles again on road

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:38 p.m. ET March 24, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Manchester City stumbled on the road yet again, needing a late deflected goal by Yaya Toure for a 1-1 tie at Stoke on Saturday that put rival Manchester United in position to open a three-point lead in the Premier League.

Peter Crouch scored for Stoke in the 59th minute after his header was headed back to him by Jermaine Pennant. Crouch flicked the ball up to himself and then volleyed past goalkeeper Joe Hart from about 25 yards. Toure's goal in the 76th hit Stoke's Ryan Shawcross and went past goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Manchester City (22-4-4) regained first place on goal difference over United (22-3-4), which has a game in hand and hosts Fulham on Monday. While City is 15-0 in the league at home, it dropped to 7-4-4 on the road.

Third-place Arsenal (18-8-4) beat visiting Aston Villa 3-0 on goals by Kieran Gibbs in the 16th minute, Theo Walcott in the 25th and Mikel Arteta in the 90th. The goals by Gibbs and Walcott marked the first time since 1997 two English players scored in a league match for the Gunners.

Fourth-place Tottenham (16-7-7) dropped three points back of Arsenal with a 0-0 tie at Chelsea (14-8-8), which is in danger of missing the Champions League for the first time since 2003.

Bolton marked its first match since Fabrice Muamba's on-field cardiac arrest last weekend with a 2-1 victory over Blackburn on two goals from David Wheater and climbed out of the relegation zone. Fans held up cards as part of a mosaic that spelt out "Muamba 6" before kickoff while there was a period of applause for the midfielder.

Queens Park Rangers replaced Bolton in the bottom three after a 3-1 loss at Sunderland, with French striker Djibril Cisse ejected for the visitors for the second time since his January move from Lazio.

Wolverhampton stayed last with a 2-1 defeat at Norwich. Wigan, which is 19th, boosted its survival hopes with a 2-1 win at seventh-place Liverpool. Everton won 2-0 at Swansea.

In the second-tier League Championship, American midfielder Robbie Rogers dressed for Leeds for the first time since sustaining a concussion in his debut for the club on Feb. 18. Rogers didn't get into the match, a 1-0 win at Millwall.

---

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Cristiano Ronaldo became the fastest player to reach 100 goals in the Spanish league, scoring twice as first-place Real Madrid routed Real Socided 5-1.

Ronaldo scored in the 32nd and 56th minutes, giving him 101 goals in 92 league games. He broke the mark set in the 1960s by Real Madrid's Ferenc Puskas, who reached 100 in 105 matches.

Gonzalo Higuain put Madrid (24-2-3) ahead in the sixth minute, and Karim Benzema added goals in the 40th and 49th.

Barcelona (22-2-6) kept pace with a 2-0 victory at Mallorca. Lionel Messi extended his scoring streak to eight games with a poorly defended free kick in the 25th minute. He became the first player in a top-level European league to score 55 goals in a season since Sporting Lisbon's Mario Jardel in 2002. Messi and Ronaldo are tied for the league lead with 35 goals each, five shy of the record Ronaldo set last season.

Barcelona's Thiago Alcantara was ejected for his second yellow card in the 56th, and Gerard Pique scored in the 79th by volleying the rebound after Messi's shot his a post.

---

MILAN (AP) - Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice, getting the tiebreaking goal in the 83rd minute to give AC Milan a 2-1 victory over visiting Roma that opened a seven-point lead in Serie A.

Pablo Osvaldo gave Roma the lead against the run of play in the 44th, but Ibrahimovic tied it in the 53rd after a hand ball by Daniele De Rossi in the penalty area. Ibrahimovic put Milan (20-4-6) ahead with his league-leading 22nd goal.

Milan defender Thiago Silva came out in the 10th minute clutching his right thigh and is questionable for Wednesday's first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Barcelona.

Second-place Juventus (14-0-14) hosts seventh-place Inter Milan (12-11-5) on Sunday.

---

BERLIN (AP) - Bayern Munich survived a late scare to beat Hannover 2-1 as Toni Kroos scored in the 36th minute and substitute Mario Gomez got his league-leading 23rd goal of the season in the 68th.

Hannover substitute Didier Ya Konan scored in the 74th but Bayern (18-6-3) held on to closer within two points of defending champion Borussia Dortmund (18-3-5), which visits relegation-threatened Cologne on Sunday.

Hoffenheim ended Borussia Moenchengladbach's 16-game home unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win, and Schalke (17-8-2) beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on a pair of goals by -Jan Huntelaar to move into third, the last automatic Champions League qualification place.

---

PARIS (AP) - Montpellier moved into first place in the French league with a 1-0 victory over Saint-Etienne on an 89th-minute goal by Olivier Giroud.

Montpellier (18-5-6) moved one point ahead of Paris Saint-Germain (17-3-8), which hosts Bordeaux on Sunday.

Judges: Ireland's ex-PM took secret payments, lied

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern denied doing anything wrong, but resigned from office in 2008 after 11 years in power.

By msnbc.com news services

DUBLIN -- Former Irish premier Bertie Ahern lied about the source of substantial sums of money he received, an inquiry concluded on Thursday in a long-awaited report into the dealings of one of the architects of Ireland's ill-fated economic boom.

The verdict comes four years after the economy collapsed under the strain of a decade-long housing and banking boom, cultivated by Ahern and his Fianna Fail party, and a year after the party was ejected from power by angry voters.

Set up in 1997, the Mahon Tribunal probed the relationships between politicians and property developers after builders made vast profits on land re-zoned as commercial.

'Endemic' corruption
In its report it said corruption was "endemic and systemic" at every level of government in Ireland in the late 1990s. Ahern was Taoiseach, or prime minister, from 1997 to 2008.

Irish PM resigns over cash-payments scandal

Ahern was one of Europe's longest serving premiers and widely praised for his work in resolving a three-decade conflict in Northern Ireland.

The three judges led by Justice Alan Mahon found that Ahern received at least ?209,779 ($276,000) in secret payments while in office and repeatedly lied about this under oath. The report stopped short of finding Ahern guilty of corruption, because they couldn't prove that Ahern gave favors to any of his cash donors when he was finance minister in the 1990s.

The judges did find two other former lawmakers in Ahern's Fianna Fail party, including former Cabinet minister and European Union commissioner Padraig Flynn, guilty of corruption for soliciting payments from property developers for personal use. They also found 11 past and present members of local councils guilty of the same offense.

Irish parliament chief quits after spending row

While the report itself was a fact-gathering effort and not a direct finding of any criminal wrongdoing, Prime Minister Enda Kenny referred its contents to state prosecutors, the national police force, tax collection authorities and the Standards in Public Office Commission. Potential offenses include corruption, obstruction of justice and tax evasion.

The report "clearly sets out corrupt practices among a number of politicians," said Kenny, who declined to say whether he considered Ahern among them.

Ahern's former special adviser in government, Gerry Howlin, described the findings as "far worse than anything I expected or believed possible."

Bizarre testimony
Ahern, whose often bizarre and implausible 2007 testimony enraptured the nation, denied doing anything wrong, but resigned from office in 2008 after 11 years in power. He issued a lengthy rebuttal Thursday night accusing the judges of unfairness and vowing to clear his name.

"I am disappointed that the tribunal has said that I failed to give a truthful account," Ahern said. "... I never took a bribe or corrupt payment. I never made a political decision in return for a payment. I hid nothing."

Yet even his own party, whose name means "soldiers of destiny" in Gaelic, failed to believe him.

Cowen elected as Ireland?s new prime minister

Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin announced after a late-night meeting of party lawmakers that he intended to expel Ahern from party membership. The decision was expected to become official March 30.

"The receipt by a senior office holder of large amounts of money which a sworn tribunal has held is of unclear origins, and the failure to give any credible explanation, requires an unequivocal response," said Martin, who served in three Cabinet posts in Ahern-led governments.

Trust 'betrayed'
He said Ahern's receipt of surreptitious funds, and his delivery of false testimony, "betrayed the trust placed in him by this country and this party."

No Irish politicians have been convicted of corruption as a result of investigations into the bribery culture at the heart of Irish property development. Prosecutions are hampered, in part, by the fact that the government passed no credible anti-bribery laws until 1996, leaving tax evasion as the only readily proven offense.

Ahern's longtime accountant and friend, Des Peelo, conceded that Ahern's testimony had been hard to swallow, but said the judges couldn't prove Ahern was lying.

Congress to hear retiring Irish prime minister

"The fact that something is bizarre does not make it untrue. Some aspects of his finances were bizarre," Peelo said.

It investigated allegations that Ahern accepted money from a developer in return for favors, a charge he rejected. He said his finances were complex but not improper during the turmoil that followed the breakdown of his marriage in the 1990s.

Ahern had admitted to accepting an envelope filled with 8,000 pounds ($12,700) in 50-pound notes from businessmen after speaking at a function in Manchester in 1994, which he said was his speaking fee. In late 2006 it emerged friends and businessmen had lent him 50,000 euros ($66,000).

"He told me he was telling the truth," special adviser Howlin said. "His narrative is not believed, and it is damning and it is serious. ... His reputation has been very seriously damaged."

We Are Going to Pay for This Beautiful, Freaky Weather

As much as we're enjoying these halcyon early spring days of bare legs and light, perfect al fresco, and walking jacketless through the park, we are also worried. Worried about what it means. Worried about what happens after our perfect March (weather people say it will be 76 degrees in New York on Thursday, and 77 in Washington) will mean once we reach June. After all, we've still got three months, and the cherry blossoms are already abloom ahead of their?normal April appearance.

RELATED: Greenhouse Gasses Reach Record Highs

By August will we be a dried up old wreck? Or will it be snowing? What are the repercussions of such an early spring, or, even prior to that, a virtually snowless winter??

RELATED: Planet Earth Had a Great Fall

Allergies.?All those blooms on trees are gorgeous, just gorgeous, until your eyes are swelled shut and you can't really see said blooms. That's when you curse tree pollen and the spring that came so early you didn't have time to refill your Zyrtec prescription. According to?Glenn Silber, an allergist with the Allergy and Asthma Center of Central Maryland, quoted in the Carroll County Times,??Patients are symptomatic earlier this year than in years gone by." Oh, so that's what that is. Check your pollen levels here, in between sneezes. Down in the Deep South, it sounds pretty brutal already. Dr. Weily Soong, an allergist at the Alabama Allergy & Asthma Center told The Birmingham News, "All of that pine pollen is landing inside your nose, just like it's landing on your car windshield. It's literally like throwing a whole bunch of sand in your face.?Your nose has to clean it out with mucus, just like the windshield fluid on your car." Ew.?Researchers at the State University of New York are, in fact, predicting?"a long and intense allergy season."?Ragweed forever.?

Bugs. Oh bugs. True story: Your correspondent found a mosquito in her baby bok choy the other day. (She washed it down the drain.) But still. Portents. There are portents. And, in fact, officials say that a mild winter plus early season warmth does tend to bring the bugs out early. However, "it doesn't mean we'll have a swarm this summer" -- necessarily. "'They're dependent upon humidity. They're dependent upon vegetation. If we really have a dry year, then it will affect their population significantly. If we have a wet year then many of them will survive,' said Dan Nichols, master gardener from Sioux City" to KTIV.com. What a wonderful choice: Bugs or droughts? (See below.)

RELATED: Let's Examine Rick Perry's Trust Issues

Produce season is weird. Your local farmer's market may be a little different this year. While strawberries usually get ripe between May and June, you might see them in late April. And "peaches should be ripe in June, about a month earlier than usual," according to the Carroll County Times. The parsnip season may also be quite short. Get ready for the vegetable market to consist only of apples and the occasional potato by August. Or, mushrooms in March, in Michigan. Go,?now!

RELATED: Here's Whom Climate Change Will Screw Over the Most

Plants and animals may be in danger. Generally, expect the unexpected.?Says?biologist Donald J. Leopold somewhat concerningly in a SUNY release, "When the weather is really altered from typical conditions, there are always winners and losers among all types of both plants and animals. With the many plant and animal species in the East, some will benefit and some will be adversely impacted with these unusually warm conditions." The AP noted back in 2007 that some animal responses to unseasonable warmth included bears not hibernating, squirrels mating early, and ducks and geese deciding to fly south for the winter later. Or, maybe, not at all. Snowshoe hares still change color from brown to white, which means they may be more easily eaten by predators, their camouflage no longer that effective. As for human animals, we should be more concerned about Lyme disease, since we're outside more.?

Droughts.??Although it is not a problem yet, we are unusually susceptible to drought conditions as we head into the spring and early summer if we don?t get some sort of pattern change going forward over the next couple of months? said?Meteorologist Dan Leonard of Weather Services?International to CBS.?(Droughts or bugs? This is so unfair.)

Syrup shortages. When you're cooking up those pancakes to eat on your deck (you have a deck?) be not so content. Maple trees need the temperature to drop below freezing at night to produce sap, and, well, that's not really been happening. According to Hillary Nelson, writing for the Concord Monitor, "My brother and sister-in-law are guessing they'll make only half as much syrup as they produce in a normal year, though what they have produced is gorgeous -- buttery flavored and amber." Get the good stuff while you?can.?

Milk excesses. Cows in Iowa are producing more milk for some reason that dairymen are attributing to the weather. "Although Iowa had about 3,000 fewer milk cows in February of this year than last, the warmer-than-usual weather inspired state?s cows to produce 5.9 percent more milk than in the colder February of 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture," writes Dan Piller in the Des Moines Register. Milk handlers are trying to find manufacturing homes for all the extra milk. Despite that, retail milk prices are up 10 percent in February, according to the USDA.

Summer accidents. We bet you didn't even know these existed, but they do. "Trauma season" typically starts in April, but it's on already, with?doctors seeing trauma cases ratchet up with the nice weather. That means car and motorcycle crashes, ATV accidents, and accidents sustained from various outdoor recreational activities (wear a helmet!). In a release from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Rick Miller, who runs trauma and surgical critical care, said, "As soon as the weather gets nice, our incidence of trauma cases increases exponentially." Stabbings and shootings also go up, presumably because more people are outside. Nice weather is dangerous.

Records. (Or, heat waves.) A little healthy competition between states is a good thing, no? Gets the blood flowing? By July of last year we'd reached a record-setting 104 degrees in New York City and 108 degrees in Newark.?It was an exceptional heat wave across the Northeast in terms of strength as well as "breadth and duration," and "to those out in the streets, it felt more like being licked by a big, swampy monster," writes Elizabeth Harris in The New York Times. Side effect of heat waves: Great similes, along with free license to sip all the icy beverages you can withstand. Let us not forget that that was neither the first nor the last record-setting heat?of the year. Let's see how we do this year, kids.?

Confusion. Do we call this "climate change" or "global warming" or a "La Ni?a effect?" How angry do we get with people who call it none of those things? Are we happy or sad about all of this great weather? Will there be a run on Zyrtec? A run on SPF? A run on air conditioners? How long will talking about how long the unseasonably warm weather will last even be interesting??These are just some of the questions we will be asking ourselves for the forseeably beautiful future. Plus, our air conditioner bills are bound to be huge.

All that's to say...go out and enjoy yourself. It's shaping up to be a gorgeous day.?

Happy birthday, Mr. Rogers

AP

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

He's been gone nearly a decade now, but somehow it still seems fitting to remember Fred Rogers on what would have been his 84th birthday.

When you grow up, you have to change a lot of the opinions you held about people and things you first encountered as a child. People fail you, jobs and schools have their bad sides, you outgrow beloved activities and hobbies.

But Fred Rogers never failed anyone. He remains in our memories as the same wonderfully kind, gentle man who took off his shoes on the set of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood"?and comforted Daniel Striped Tiger in The Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

In 2000, Rogers told Rob Owen of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that "Those of us in broadcasting have a special calling to give whatever we feel is the most nourishing that we can for our audience. We are servants of those who watch and listen."

Just look at a TV listing these days. It's pretty obvious not everyone feels that way about the TV shows they make, whether they're for the preschool set or for older, more jaded audiences.

He also told Newsweek, "?"One of the greatest gifts you can give anybody is the gift of your honest self. I also believe that kids can spot a phony a mile away."

They can indeed, and there was nothing phony about Mr. Rogers, not ever.

Were you a fan of Mr. Rogers? Share your memories on Facebook.

Auto Repair and Vehicle Troubleshooting | NJPARKINGINST

Auto Repair and Vehicle Troubleshooting

Article by Morrison?s Discount Auto Repair

A lot of things can go wrong with your vehicle but there are certain common car problems we usually encounter. Auto repair shops probably get these problems more than once in a day?s work. If your vehicle breaks down, the last thing you should do is panic or get mad. Knowing a bit about auto repair and maintenance basics can save you a lot of trouble (and money), and so, here are some things to keep in mind.

According to most auto repair shops, vehicle parts that often get in trouble are the brakes, the transmission engine, and the AC. Brake repair and AC repair are less expensive than getting the transmission fixed but nonetheless, you?ll still be spending for something relatively expensive.

Brake repair is necessary if you?re experiencing these instances with your vehicle: (1) Noisy brakes, (2) The brake pedal keeps vibrating (3) The pedals are too stiff. Noisy brakes are often caused by word brake pads or lack of lubrication. You might need to replace the caliper hardware, replace the pads, clean the brakes, or dampen the pads. The auto repair shop will do either one or two of these solutions. In the case of stiff pedals, the usual brake repair treatment involves fixing or replacing the vacuum hose or booster. Sometimes, a faulty check valve will allow vacuum to bleed out of the booster causing a hard pedal when the brakes are applied. Auto repair shops diagnose this condition by starting the engine (to build vacuum), shutting it off, waiting four or five minutes, then trying the brakes to see if there is power assist. No assist means a new check valve is needed. Lastly, a pulsating or vibrating brake pedal indicates a warped brake rotor that needs to be resurfaced or replaced. Wheel bearings might also need attention in such cases as well so have the auto repair shop check them out.

AC repair is often an immediate need for places like Tampa due to the tropical weather. The most common complaint with ACs happen when the unit stops producing cool air. The most likely cause of an automotive air conditioner cooling problem is that there?s no refrigerant in the system. If the refrigerant has escaped past a leaky compressor or O-ring seal, leaked out of a pinhole in the evaporator or condenser, or seeped out through a leaky hose, the leak needs to be identified and repaired before the system is recharged. Leaky units are the most common cause for an unscheduled AC repair stopover so always have the auto repair shop look for leaks when you?re getting a general check up.

According to an auto repair shop, leaks can be found by adding special dye to the system (available in pressurized cans premixed with refrigerant), an electronic leak detector, or plain old soapy water (spray on hose connections and watch for bubbles-requires adding some refrigerant to system first and turning the A/C on). Once you?ve found a leak, AC repairs should be made prior to fully recharging the system. Most AC repairs on leaks involve replacing O-rings, seals or hoses. But if the evaporator or condenser is leaking, repairs can get a lot more expensive.

When it comes to common auto problems, transmission damage is the most complex and expensive. Transmission repairs could set you back from 0-00, depending on what needs to be fixed or replaced. Costs also depend on whether your car runs on manual or automatic clutch transmission. Manual transmissions are usually more reliable than automatics so transmission repair is more undergone by the latter.

For auto repair needs such as brake repair, AC repair, transmission repair, custom exhaust installation, and general check up, look for a reliable and trusted auto repair vendor in your area.

Iran ups currency exchange rate to reflect street

(AP) ? Iran's Central Bank is moving to bring part of its official foreign currency exchange rate into line with the much higher rate on the streets.

The bank announced Sunday that it would allow authorized money changers to trade dollars at 19,000 rials per dollar, while the official rate remains at 12,260.

The Iranian currency has lost much of its value because of Western sanctions over Iran's nuclear development program.

Iran has a burgeoning black market in currencies because of the wide gap between the official and street exchange rates.

It was not clear if the central bank would continue adjusting its market rate to reflect the unofficial street price.

The lower, official rate is still used for importing essential goods, in effect lowering their prices for Iranians.

In search of Church Set Design Ideas? - Shopping and Product ...

There are various various scenic and stylistic selections which a style artist can perform with, and based on the type of design theyre familiar with operating with, the props, tools and machinery, along with the space limitations that are placed on them, there are plenty of distinct set creation themes which is often chosen, depending on the sorts of scenes that are getting shot by that designer and director. Regardless of whether you function on a Tv series, movies, or for award shows, picking a great church set design ideas will certainly make or break the scenes.

So, when taking into consideration the church set design ideas, it will not matter what type of set its, from movies to live Television, making confident which you capture the scene, the feeling, as well as the type of mood that the director is attempting to set, are the main issues to consider as a set designer. The additional time that 1 takes in contemplating the props to be made use of, lighting, unique effects, and tips on how to set up the entire scene in common, the greater it is going to turn out when the viewers are actually seeing it reside, or on the huge screen, or in their living rooms on their favourite Tv shows.

Depending on no matter whether the set creation is for some thing reside (like plays, or Tv shows which might be shot in front of a reside audience) or if they are to be noticed on Television or films, the types of special effects, and the further tools that a designer is going to incorporate when developing the set design are also going to differ. So, if it is live, they may be going to need to take into account almost everything becoming great, from the lighting, towards the colour sequences, to the alter in scenes. On account of the fact that its noticed in genuine time, and has no location for editing, the set design has to become ideal. But, if it is going to become edited, and is produced for Television or for the films, if particular items are off inside the set design, or if colours or lighting just isnt excellent, the designers nonetheless have a likelihood to fix it during the editing phase, or even though fixing the set creation up for the next scene which theyre going to be shooting on set.

Thinking about all the aspects and components that need to go in to building a specific set design, designers must consider all elements of ways to create the right set style, based on what they may be creating, and no matter whether theyre working with live shows, or one thing that is going to be edited prior to being observed by viewers. The extra time, plus the extra work that designers put in towards the set style, along with the overall top quality of how items appear on screen, or when viewed reside, the improved the set style will turn out when time comes for the viewing public to see what the designers had been able to create.

SPSCC's Early Learning and Education Programs: Educating ...

By Stacee Sledge

Four years ago, inspiration struck South Puget Sound Community College professor Chris Moon.

?A colleague and I had gone to a parenting talk and we said, we should bring this to our community,? says Moon, who is also the program lead for SPSCC?s Early Learning and Education Programs, which includes Education, Early Childhood Education, and the Parenting Education Program.

Moon and her Parenting Education Program team envisioned bringing parenting information to the wider community through lectures and family events.

Moon and her SPSCC colleagues teach early childhood education and parenting classes, both on-campus ? for parents in the community and enrolled SPSCC students going into the field of teaching ? and through four area cooperative preschools.

?We wanted to promote that parents need to have fun with their kids. Not only do they need information on how to be the best parent they can be, we also wanted them to recognize that having fun with your kids is part of parenting.?

?We also wanted it to be free to the community, with free childcare, and bring in quality speakers,? says Moon. ?And then we wanted to also have one family concert every year.?

Working with Shelly Willis, executive director of Family Education and Support Services, Moon and her Parent Education Program colleagues created the Parenting Tools Lecture Series.

The objective of Parenting Tools is to work as a collaborative effort between Thurston County agencies and groups to provide support to parents through free lectures and family events.

?We want to destigmatize the idea that parents need help,? Moon says. ?We want to offer this information that gives parents a shot in the arm a couple times a year, gives them a night out.?

Different local agencies pulled together money and the Parenting Tools Lecture Series started gathering sponsors. ?It was really, truly a community collaboration,? says Moon.

The organization is now sponsored by more than a dozen local organizations and businesses. ?We couldn?t do it without the generous financial and in-kind support of many sponsors,? says Moon.

The Parenting Tools Lecture Series schedules two lectures per academic year, with the Hands On Children?s Museum and the YMCA providing free on-site childcare.

And for the past four years, Seattle?s popular Recess Monkey has performed to a packed SPSCC theater of dancing children and toe-tapping parents.

The next Parenting Tools Lecture Series event takes place this Wednesday, March 21st, with best-selling author Ellen Galinsky. Thurston Early Childhood Coalition is a major sponsor of the event.

?We?re really excited to have her, because she?s such a well-known speaker,? Moon says of Galinsky. ?It?s kind of a coup for our community because there?s been a lot of activity in the early childhood world around her information.?

Galinsky is a national best-selling author of Mind in the Making and will speak about the seven essential skills that kids and adults need to be successful.

The seven life skills she identifies as essential to success in school, the workforce, and life, are:

  1. Focus and control
  2. Perspective-taking
  3. Communicating
  4. Making connections
  5. Critical thinking
  6. Taking on challenges
  7. Self-directed, engaged learning

Galinsky will speak on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Kenneth J. Minneart Center for the Arts at South Puget Sound Community College. The Hands On Children?s Museum and YMCA will provide free on-site childcare for children ages 3-12 (registration required; call HOCM at 360.956.0818 x0).

?

For more information, call 360.596.5293.

Teachers of Tomorrow Club will also be collecting food for the Thurston County Food Bank.

Home Health Care | Ultimate Home Fitness

Salt Lake City Home Health Care. Best home health care in the state. I know of several people that work at one home health care center or another. They have all seemed to enjoy it. It definitely would be a hard job taking care of people all day. I know that those friends of mine who have worked for a home health care have said that they could never work there for longer than a few months.

There is only so much you can take at a care center. If you get a job at a home health care center. You will find that it can be very strenuous work taking care of those who don?t want you to take care of them. Or have a patient that forgets who you are every time you leave the room. A lot of the people at a home health care center are very angry and don?t want to be there. They get a little grumpy from sitting around in their wheelchairs all day. But enough of all the negative things about home health care. There are so many good things that I hear about it to help out weigh the negative.

I have heard that not everyone in home health care is grumpy and not wanting to be there. I have heard of many sweet hearted people in home health care. They thank those who take care of them and thank them for there services. I know someone who although they don?t work at the home health care any longer, they still get phone calls from those they helped. They still keep in touch with those the took care of. It is quite sweet and fun to see a patient who really appreciates what health care they have been given.

My friends have worked with two different fields of home health care. One that deals mainly with those with disabilities, both mental or physical. And one that worked more and took care of seniors. In senior care you can get some of the sweetest or grumpiest people in the world. I have helped volunteer at a place where it is mainly senior patients that need help. We have sang songs and played instruments for them. They appreciate it so much and are so sweet. Senior care is such a great thing. The home health care systems are just phenomenal. As you talk to those in senior care, you can really get a better perspective on life and what is important. Senior care patients can tell story after story of what they have learned in life. And even though a lot has changed. Most principles still apply.

One last thing that my friends have done with home health care is work with the mentally handicap. They are such sweet and innocent people. So much to learn from them as you take care of them. Sometimes a family will come to visit their daughter who is a patient in a home health care center. It is great to see the presence of their family light up their faces. If you are ever looking for a job in home health care. It definitely will pay off. And they are always in need of more helping hands.
