Sensitive New Sensor Detects Prostate Cancer in Early Stages

British scientists have designed a prototype of a highly sensitive scanner that can detect diseases such as prostate cancer and HIV in very early stages. They consider their discovery extremely useful in countries where high-tech detection equipment is scarce.

The researchers, from Imperial College London, reported that their new visual sensor technology is 10 times more sensitive than traditional disease detectors that measure biomarkers in the body, according to Medical News Today.

The team tested the sensor's accuracy in looking for a biomarker known as p24 that's associated with HIV in human blood samples. They tested other samples for the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) marker, one indicator of prostate cancer.

The National Cancer Institute predicts that more than 240,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012 and that more than 28,000 of them will die. A male newborn has a one in six chance of developing this disease.

The two standard ways of detecting this cancer are a digital rectal exam and a PSA test. In early stages, many cases have no symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, use of the PSA test is debatable because studies have never proven that the blood test saves lives. It can yield suspicious results even when the patient merely has an infection.

The new sensor detects prostate cancer by looking for PSA in a blood sample. With a positive result, irregular clumps of nanoparticles form and emit a specific blue shade inside the disposable container. For a negative test, the nanoparticles separate and form shapes that resemble a ball. The process creates a red hue. Both colors are visible to the naked eye.

The ultra-sensitive sensor could detect certain diseases at much earlier stages than current technology can find. It found miniscule levels of p24 in samples from patients with low HIV viral loads, a result impossible with standard tests like the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).

The next step toward implementation is finding a sponsor among not-for-profit global health organizations to oversee the strategy for development, funding, and distribution of the technology.

While use of the sensor in the United States might be years away, the device is of special interest to my family. After years of lower-than-average PSA results, the numbers for my husband, who has a family history of prostate cancer, shot up last year. A test six months later showed even higher numbers.

The urologist performed prostate biopsies that caused bleeding and discomfort for weeks. The results showed no sign of malignancy, calling into question the validity of the two tests. A year later, the numbers mysteriously returned to the low end of the normal range. It would be reassuring to have access to this sensitive new sensor, knowing that it has the capacity to detect prostate cancer in very early stages.

HBT: Verlander won't start Game 4 on short rest

After last night?s loss Jim Leyland was asked if he?d consider bringing back Justin Verlander on short rest to start Game 4 if the Tigers were facing elimination and the manager made it clear that?s not an option.

Verlander threw just four innings in Game 1, which normally might make coming back on short rest doable, but his 98 pitches weren?t a particularly light workload.

It?s also worth noting that the Tigers aren?t exactly relying on a bum in Game 4 as is, with Max Scherzer set to take the mound. He?s arguably Detroit?s second-best starter and would be the No. 1 guy on a lot of teams.

Verlander, who now has a 4.22 ERA in 12 career playoff starts, is slated to pitch Game 5 in Detroit on Monday if the Tigers can extend the series.

Oregon scientists make embryos with 2 women, 1 man

NEW YORK (AP) ? Scientists in Oregon have created embryos with genes from one man and two women, using a provocative technique that could someday be used to prevent babies from inheriting certain rare incurable diseases.

The researchers at Oregon Health & Sciences University said they are not using the embryos to produce children, and it is not clear when or even if this technique will be put to use. But it has already stirred a debate over its risks and ethics in Britain, where scientists did similar work a few years ago.

The British experiments, reported in 2008, led to headlines about the possibility someday of babies with three parents. But that's an overstatement. The DNA from the second woman amounts to less than 1 percent of the embryo's genes, and it isn't the sort that makes a child look like Mom or Dad. The procedure is simply a way of replacing some defective genes that sabotage the normal workings of cells.

The British government is asking for public comment on the technology before it decides whether to allow its use in the future. One concern it cites is whether such DNA alteration could be an early step down a slippery slope toward "designer babies" ? ordering up, say, a petite, blue-eyed girl or tall, dark-haired boy.

Questions have also arisen about the safety of the technique, not only for the baby who results from the egg, but also for the child's descendants.

In June, an influential British bioethics group concluded that the technology would be ethical to use if proven safe and effective. An expert panel in Britain said in 2011 that there was no evidence the technology was unsafe but urged further study.

Laurie Zoloth, a bioethicist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., said in an interview that safety problems might not show up for several generations. She said she hopes the United States will follow Britain's lead in having a wide-ranging discussion of the technology.

While the kind of diseases it seeks to fight can be terrible, "this might not be the best way to address it," Zoloth said.

Over the past few years, scientists have reported that such experiments produced healthy monkeys and that tests in human eggs showed encouraging results. The Oregon scientists reported Wednesday that they have produced about a dozen early human embryos and found the technique is highly effective in replacing DNA.

The genes they want to replace aren't the kind most people think of, which are found in the nucleus of cells and influence traits such as eye color and height. Rather, these genes reside outside the nucleus in energy-producing structures called mitochondria. These genes are passed along only by mothers, not fathers.

About 1 in every 5,000 children inherits a disease caused by defective mitochondrial genes. The defects can cause many rare diseases with a host of symptoms, including strokes, epilepsy, dementia, blindness, deafness, kidney failure and heart disease.

The new technique, if approved someday for routine use, would allow a woman to give birth to a baby who inherits her nucleus DNA but not her mitochondrial DNA. Here's how it would work:

Doctors would need unfertilized eggs from the patient and a healthy donor. They would remove the nucleus DNA from the donor eggs and replace it with nucleus DNA from the patient's eggs. So, they would end up with eggs that have the prospective mother's nucleus DNA, but the donor's healthy mitochondrial DNA.

In a report published online Wednesday by the journal Nature, Shoukhrat Mitalipov and others at OHSU report transplanting nucleus DNA into 64 unfertilized eggs from healthy donors. After fertilization, 13 eggs showed normal development and went on to form early embryos.

The researchers also reported that four monkeys born in 2009 from eggs that had DNA transplants remain healthy, giving some assurance on safety.

Mitalipov said in an interview that the researchers hope to get federal approval to test the procedure in women, but that current restrictions on using federal money on human embryo research stand in the way of such studies.

The research was funded by the university and the Leducq Foundation in Paris.

Dr. Douglass Turnbull of Newcastle University in Britain, whose team has transplanted DNA between eggs using a different technique, called the new research "very important and encouraging" in showing that such transplants could work.

But "clearly, safety is an issue" with either technique if it is applied to humans, he said.

Compared with its rivals, iPad Mini is short on pixels

The iPad Mini may have a larger screen than its competitors, but it doesn't have the sharpest screen?resolution.

By TechNewsDaily staff,?TechNewsDaily / October 24, 2012

Apple's new iPad Mini boasts a larger screen than Google's Nexus 7 or Barnes & Noble's Nook, but has lower screen resolution than both devices.

In the tech world, product specs can be tricky to parse. When Apple introduced its iPad mini yesterday (Oct. 23), it made much of the mini's bigger screen in a side-by-side comparison with the rival Google Nexus 7. What Apple didn't say is that the Nexus 7 (which starts at $199, compared with the iPad mini's starting price of $329) has 30 percent greater resolution.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

And the New Nook HD (also starting at $199) offers the highest resolution of small tablets. Its 7-inch screen packs four times as many dots as the mini's.

If you want to watch HD video, it won't fit on the iPad mini (or, for that matter, the original iPad or iPad 2, which have the same resolution). But the Nexus 7 has a few more pixels than needed for basic "720p" HD, and the Nook has well more than needed for the best-level of HD, known as 1080p.

In fact, the iPad mini barely tops (by less than 60,000 pixels) the new?iPhone 5, which has just a 5-inch screen (of a different ? widescreen ? shape).

But just as screen dimensions don't tell the full story, neither do just pixel counts. A larger screen can have larger virtual buttons and text entry fields, for example, making them easier (if less detailed) targets for fat fingers.

And true HD may not matter so much at this size, unless you have your nose pressed to the screen. TV makers, for example, generally say 720p is fine for screens below 42 inches (measured diagonally). It's noticeable only at 50 inches and larger.

Time will tell whether screen size or pixels make more of a difference for the iPad mini. But certainly one number doesn't tell the whole story.

Supposed first Jelly Bean build for Samsung Galaxy Note leaks out

Android Central

Excitement continues to build around the world for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 -- we're in NYC tonight for the Next Big Thing event -- but what of its predecessor? Owners of the original Galaxy Note are eagerly awaiting word on Jelly Bean for their beloved devices.

XDA Developers forums member eybee1970 has posted what is apparently the first full leaked official build of Android 4.1 for the original Note. However, this is an extremely early build, and flashing to your own devices is discouraged. Contained within are things we would expect to see from Jelly Bean -- Google Now for instance -- but there are things missing, and big nasty bugs within making this one not for the faint at heart.

Word is, that the official update could be due to drop in December. A software update in early September brought a selection of the Samsung features from the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 to the Note, but we're under no illusions that it's Jelly Bean you folks want.

Lynn University Begins To Get Back To Normal

BOCA RATON (CBS4) ? Students are attending classes, but things are still not quite back to normal at Lynn University. The rush is on to break down all the infrastructure put in place for the third and final debate as quickly as possible.

What took days to set up took just hours to break down. Starting from the top and working their way down, it took about 50 people to bring down the heavy stage walls, the entire lighting system, and every pole, cable and crate, needed to put on a show as big as a presidential debate.

Michael Foley designed the entire set used in the debate and oversaw the breakdown.

?We put in all the rigging, lighting, audio and scenery. It?s like a traveling road show,? he told CBS4?s Natalia Zea. ?It?s actually pretty intricate, we?ve been working on this design since March and doing surveys. Not only did we have to make it work in Hofstra as a town hall, had to make it work in Denver as an ice arena.?

Their work is now part of history. The specially designed table with extra leg room for the candidates has been on debate sets since 2004, and the large eagle showpiece has overseen 26 debates. It now all goes into storage.

?It was a once in a lifetime moment,? said Lynn University freshman Linda Foinding. ?It?s something I?m going to tell my children about.?

Lynn University president Kevin Ross admitted he hasn?t slept much this week, but has no intention of slowing down after the debate.

?I saw somebody had up on their Twitter, ?Lynn University Olympics 2016 or 2018? I don?t even remember and I said, oh geez let?s take a knee for a minute. I think we?ve done our civic duty.?

South Florida workers are taking apart canopies and stages across the campus.

?We?ve been working all week here so they brought us a lot of business,? said Dan Russ of Panache Party Rentals.

The more than 3,500 members of the international media also broke down to head to the next stop.

Students, like Autumn Barr seem sad to see it all go.

?We had signs saying 30 days til the debate, 10 days til the debate and now it?s over, it?s done. All of it is just over and it?s kind of depressing,? Barr said.

Still, Lynn University will reap the rewards for this debate for a long time.

There was a campus lake filled in to accommodate debate parking is going to become a new soccer and lacrosse stadium. The hi-speed Internet systems that reporters relied on will be put to use on campus starting in December.

?In my dorm, I only get one bar. They said everyone on campus no matter where you stand you?ll have five,? said student Carolyn Hartman. ?So I?m waiting for it President Ross!?

Ross said he plans to deliver and then some.

?We are going to be looking at a way for all our first year students to get some form of tablet, whether it?s an iPad, that has all their course materials digitized onto it allowing them to connect with faculty members in ways that they haven?t been able to do just yet,? Ross said.

Upon hearing the news, Lynn University junior Joe Anzeveno smiled and said, ?That?s awesome. Thanks for telling me that!?

Overall, students said this debate did something for Lynn that will last for years to come.

?People have been stopping by and taking photos saying ?Oh yeah I live near Lynn? instead of saying, ?Where?s that?? And they?re proud, Boca residents are really proud,? Barr said.

Ghana frees ally of ex-Ivory Coast leader, drops murder charge

ACCRA (Reuters) - A court in Ghana released a top ally of former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo on Wednesday after dismissing charges brought by Ivorian authorities that he murdered two men during last year's post-election civil war.

Allegations that pro-Gbagbo exiles in Ghana have masterminded a rash of armed raids on security and infrastructure targets in Ivory Coast in recent months have strained relations between the two West African neighbors.

Justin Kone Katinan, Gbagbo's former budget minister, was arrested in August on an international warrant accusing him of financial crimes.

After being released on bail, he was re-arrested and charged with two killings allegedly committed at the height of the conflict, which erupted after Gbagbo refused to accept the victory of rival Alassane Ouattara in a poll in late 2010.

"Unless you can tell me a reason how legally you are able to initiate proceedings against Mr Katinan, I have no option but to release him...You are free," Judge Ali Baba Bature told a court in Ghana's capital Accra, dismissing the murder charges.

Katinan still faces possible extradition to Ivory Coast on the earlier warrant which accuses him of organizing raids on 10 Ivorian banks during the election crisis and stealing a total of around 300 billion CFA francs ($592.91 million).

His extradition hearing is scheduled to continue on November 7.

"The outcome doesn't surprise us. We believe they were trumped up charges to send Mr Katinan into the hands of the powers that be in his country," Katinan's lawyer Patrick Sogbodjor told Reuters, referring to the murder case.

Ivory Coast's government spokesman said it "respected" the decision of the Ghanaian court.

"We think that the Ghanaian justice system is sovereign, therefore we do not have any particular comment to make," Bruno Kone told Reuters.

While Gbagbo is currently awaiting trial in The Hague accused of crimes against humanity, many of his top political and military allies are living in exile, having fled Ivory Coast at the end of the war.

Several leading members of the regime, including Katinan, have established a base in Ghana from which they are working to destabilize the new government, according to a report by a United Nations expert panel released this month.

The U.N. investigators, who are charged with monitoring an arms embargo in Ivory Coast, say the pro-Gbagbo exiles are behind a series of armed raids that began in August.

The attacks led Ouattara, now president, to order the closure last month of Ivory Coast's border with Ghana, a measure that remained in place for more than two weeks disrupting trade along one of West Africa's principal transport corridors. ($1 = 505.9830 CFA francs)

Sluggish real estate projects face suspension risk ? TalkVietnam

Property projects that have yet to finish site clearance and compensation issues despite being granted licences should be suspended, said Construction Minister Trinh Dinh Dung at a recent press conference.

Sluggish real estate projects face suspension risk

Sluggish real estate projects face suspension risk

The local property market has been in a very difficult situation as land and housing prices in all segments have sharply decreased, which has caused financial problems, particularly for small and medium-sized firms.

?In this context, projects which have yet completed site clearance and compensation activities should be stopped because the on-going massive investment would push investors into risk of bankruptcy due higher supply compared to the demand,? the minister added.

The Ministry of Construction has asked agencies to consider current real estate market demand. Localities are also required to check property projects to define which should be cancelled, delayed or re-considered.

Developers at the press conference also requested that the ministry review policies on investment procedures, interest rates and land use fees.

Nguyen Manh Ha, Head of the Department of Housing and Property Market Management under the Ministry of Construction, said Hanoi had seen a great rise in the number of unsold apartments, especially in suburban areas, even though prices in almost every price range have sharply decreased.

Around 40,000 apartments currently lie vacant. In Ho Chi Minh City, roughly 20,000 apartments are still up for sale.

Economist Vu Dinh Anh said ?If an average apartment costs about VN1 billion or USD47,000, that means the total value of the unsold apartments in the two cities is probably in the region of 2.86 billion dollars.?

Earnings concerns weigh on shares

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's top share index lost ground on Monday, extending declines on concerns about upcoming third quarter earnings.

Drugmakers dipped, with Shire down 1.8 percent and AstraZeneca off 0.5 percent. The firms kick off the heavyweight sector's results season on Thursday.

According to Thomson Reuters Starmine data, of the 8 percent of European companies that have reported results so far, nearly half have missed forecasts.

TR Starmine analysts have estimated year-on-year third-quarter earnings growth at 7.6 percent in Europe, while the average for companies that have already reported is a 4.2 percent drop.

At the close, the FTSE 100 was down 17.82 points, or 0.3 percent, at 5,882.91 points, having shed 0.4 percent on Friday to snap a four-session winning streak.

UK blue chips tracked weakness in their U.S. peers, with the Dow Jones off 0.3 percent by London's close, having dropped sharply on Friday, also pressured by earnings concerns.

Among the U.S. fallers, mining company Freeport-McMoRan lost 0.9 percent after its third-quarter profit fell sharply, missing Wall Street estimates.

UK-listed miners, however, featured on the FTSE leaderboard, steadying after falls on Friday, with traders citing support from positive European strategy comments from Morgan Stanley.

The bank's strategists switched their preference to miners from chemicals within European materials, which is their preferred cyclical sector, citing relative valuations and signs of an improving economic outlook in China.

"I think the mining sector is not that widely owned, particularly amongst the UK long-only community. Miners have been consensus underweight for some time, and therefore people at a minimum will start closing their underweight positions, which will put upward pressure on share prices", said Graham Secker, equity strategist at Morgan Stanley.

Gold miner Randgold Resources and following a hike in target price by Societe Generale to 9,000 pence from 7,600.

Precious metals firm Johnson Matthey missed out on the sector gains, falling 2.1 percent having spiked by a similar amount in the previous session on speculative interest.

Andrew Gibson, Head of Research at Galvan said the share represented a buying opportunity, citing technical factors.

Reverse brain drain: Economic shifts lure migrants home

The tide of brain drain ? from developing countries to industrialized nations ? has turned. Human capital is returning home to Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa, while some European professionals squeezed by the recession, turn toward developing countries for advancement.

Portuguese engineer Francisco Cruz ? part of the reverse brain drain in which human capital is flowing from rich nations to developing nations ? moved to Rio de Janeiro for better opportunity. Academics and college-educated engineers from?Brazil to China to Poland have long set off for the world's more developed nations for better opportunities, sometimes in their own fields, often behind steering wheels or in fast-food or restaurant kitchens.

Indeed, over time about 75 percent of international migrants typically moved to a country with a higher level of human development than their country of origin, according to the United Nations Development Fund.

But now that tide is turning; immigrants no longer always see developed countries as a better place to be. This U-turn ? a "brain gain" for developing countries ? features people like Kenyan Sitati Kituyi, who opted to get off the high-powered consultancy ladder in London for a tech start-up in Africa. Or Han Jie, an entrepreneur, lured home to China from the United States with government incentives to set up a medical-equipment factory. Or Bernardo Fontoura, a young Portuguese in business communications, who moved to Rio de Janeiro to be part of what he calls Brazil's "golden age" as it readies for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

The financial crisis that began in 2008 has tested middle-class America's sense of stability and the European right to social welfare. It has also caused many to question whether the developed world is still the only land of opportunity worth migrating to.

Difficulty breathing, chest pain, and cough key symptoms for embolism

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Difficulty breathing, chest pain, and cough may sound like symptoms of a heart attack; however, new research shows that these are the key symptoms for pulmonary embolism (PE), a potentially fatal blockage in the lung.

A research team from Saint Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, retrospectively reviewed the clinical features, risk factors, and ECG findings in 334 patients with confirmed PE. Results showed that dyspnea or difficulty breathing, chest pain, and cough were present in 72%, 38%, and 19% of the patients, respectively, and dyspnea was the only presenting symptom in 29%.

Cancer was the most common risk factor present in 27%, followed by prior history of deep vein thrombosis or PE, immobilization, and surgery in 19%, 15%, and 15%, respectively.

This study was presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 -- 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Energy-sensing switch discovery could have broad implications

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? Biochemists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have discovered a genetic sequence that can alter its host gene's activity in response to cellular energy levels. The scientists have found this particular energy-sensing switch in bacterial genes, which could make it a target for a powerful new class of antibiotics. If similar energy-sensing switches are also identified for human genes, they may be useful for treating metabolism-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

"This discovery adds a new dimension to our understanding of how cells sense and manage their energy levels, which is one of the most important processes in biology," said the study's senior author, Martha J. Fedor, a professor the departments of Chemical Physiology and Molecular Biology and a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

The findings are described online ahead of print on October 21, 2012, in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

A Fuel Sensor

This type of gene-switching sequence is known as a riboswitch because it appears on the strand of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that is first transcribed from a gene's DNA. Unlike other known riboswitches, which have relatively limited functions, this one acts as a sensor for the basic molecular fuel that powers all living cells and controls many genes.

The newly discovered riboswitch detects a small molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the standard unit of chemical energy in all known organisms on our planet. Scientists had thought that cells use only large and relatively complex proteins to sense these all-important energy molecules and adjust cell activities accordingly. No one had found ATP sensors among riboswitches, which can alter cell activity at a more fundamental level -- usually by interrupting a gene's transcription from DNA.

Moreover, previously described riboswitches are relatively simple feedback sensors that affect narrow metabolic pathways. Most of them merely sense and adjust the expression rate of their own host gene. "This is the first riboswitch that is known to be involved in global metabolic regulation," said Fedor.

In recent years, the Fedor team had found hints that such a riboswitch could exist. Many RNA sequences with possible riboswitch activity had never been characterized, and several riboswitches in bacteria sense molecules that are closely related to ATP. Fedor and a graduate student in her laboratory, Peter Y. Watson, therefore set out to find bacterial riboswitches that could indeed sense ATP.

Caught in the Act

The task was more challenging than it might have seemed. Watson could not simply expose suspected riboswitches to ATP and see which ones stuck best to the energy molecules. ATP is present in high concentrations in cells, and its interactions with its known protein sensors are necessarily fleeting, low-affinity affairs. Interactions with a riboswitch would be expected to look the same. "Such interactions are really too weak to be detected using traditional methods," Watson said. But he found evidence that an RNA interaction with an ATP-like molecule would occur in a way that allows the brief coupling to be caught in the act -- using a burst of ultraviolet radiation, which can create a strong chemical crosslink between two molecules.

In this way, he discovered a stretch of apparent ATP-binding RNA known as the ydaO motif. Watson performed structure-mapping analyses of ydaO to confirm that it binds to ATP and to determine precisely where it binds. Attaching ydaO to a "reporter" gene, he found that in bacterial cells, the reporter gene's expression level stayed low when ATP levels were normal and rose sharply when ATP levels dropped -- as would be expected if ydaO is really an ATP-sensing riboswitch. Even in unaltered cells of a test bacterium, B. subtilis, levels of the genes that normally contain the ydaO motif rose and fell in the same way in response to changing ATP levels.

The ydaO motif occurs in the large subset of bacteria known as gram-positive bacteria. Across these bacterial species, it has been found, to date, on 580 separate genes. "These ydaO-regulated genes encode proteins that have a wide variety of functions, from cell wall metabolism to amino acid transport," Watson said. "It makes sense that a riboswitch in control of such disparate processes would be responding to a central metabolite such as ATP."

New Possibilities

The finding has basic scientific importance because it is the first known example of a riboswitch that binds ATP; it is also the first known riboswitch that has such broad regulatory functions. "It opens up the possibility that RNA switches are involved in the general regulation of metabolism," said Fedor.

The fact that ydaO motifs serve as "off-switches" for key bacterial genes also makes them a potential target for new antibiotics. "Hitting these riboswitches with a small-molecule, ATP-mimicking drug so that they can't turn on genes that promote bacterial growth and survival could be a viable approach," said Fedor.

Her laboratory will now search for other ATP-sensing riboswitches in bacteria and in higher organisms, including humans. A human ATP-sensing riboswitch, if targeted appropriately by drugs, might be able to alter cell activity in ways that help treat common metabolic disorders. Type 2 diabetes, which presently affects several hundred million people worldwide, is known to feature the improper regulation of ATP levels in cells.

Funding for the study, "The ydaO motif is an ATP-sensing riboswitch in Bacillus subtilis," was provided by the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

Substitute Sugary Drinks With These Alternatives To Lose Weight ...

Most people have heard at some point or another, ?soda is bad for you? but the question is- why are they bad?

If you?re anything like me, being reprimanded and told that ?something is bad? isn?t really going to stop me from doing it..I really need to know why and various options always help make the transition easier :)

So first off- why ?soda is bad?

Diet and regular sodas have both been linked to obesity, kidney damage, and certain cancers. Sodas are also connected to elevated blood pressure. The drinks are seen as a major contributor to the obesity epidemic and in a way- it?s not surprising. Soda is comparatively cheap and they are usually wrongly recognized to be ?low-calorie? items (which obviously, they are not- particularly when several soft drinks are drank).

Many studies indicate that overweight children and adults enjoy more sugary beverages than normal-weight kids and adults, and several studies found that the greater sugar-sweetened drinks people drank the greater their likelihood of becoming overweight. And here is where not simply soda, but sugary drinks bring it to the next level: the more sugary drinks you consume, the more food you are inclined to eat. Why? Because of the ?sugar highs and lows? of the soft drinks and the amount of caffeine. Sugary and processed foods (and drinks) often hold you over for 10-15 minutes before you find yourself looking for a snack again..or an additional sugary or caffeinated drink. A snack of lean protein and a complex carb can hold you over for three hours!

Why energy drinks are harmful

Energy drinks can be associated with all of the concerns of soda (above). But in addition to that is the even HIGHER level of caffeine. With soda the FDA limits just how much caffeine can be in soda (65mg per 12 oz), but with energy drinks, they are not controlled. ?The FDA does not regulate caffeine in energy drinks, some of which, like Cocaine, contain huge amounts of caffeine: 280 mg in an 8.4-ounce serving, compared with about 100 mg per 6 ounces in coffee.? (Boston Globe)

By and large, the added caffeine has not been discovered to be ?life-threatening?. However caffeine can increase anxiety, panic, some stomach problems, plus some cardiac arrhythmia.

Drinks high in sugar or high in caffeine options:

-flavored water..not the sort you shop for! Toss a few frozen strawberries in the water bottle, or have a pitcher of water in the fridge. The frozen fruit triples as ?water flavoring?, ice, and a healthy indulgence once it?s thawed out!

-green tea- it?s calorie-free (if you have it without milk or sugar) and naturally high in antioxidants

-seltzer water & juice- you get the fizziness of the soda (less the majority of the sugar and caffeine) together with flavor of your preferred juice. Or again, add items of frozen fruit to liven it up!

-soy milk- naturally sweet and generally are now offered in a variety of flavors, including almond and vanilla. The rewards show that soy milk may reduce your risk for heart disease and osteoporosis. Look for low-fat, unsweetened soy beverages to decrease calories

Children with mental health disorders more often identified as bullies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Children diagnosed with mental health disorders were three times more likely to be identified as bullies, according to new research presented Oct. 22 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

Bullying is a form of youth violence defined as repetitive, intentional aggression that involves a disparity of power between the victim and perpetrator. A 2011 nationwide survey found 20 percent of U.S. high school students were bullied during the preceding 12 months. And while it is well-established that victims of bullying are at increased risk for mental health illness and suicide, few studies have investigated the mental health status of those who do the bullying.

In the study, "Association Between Mental Health Disorders and Bullying in the United States Among Children Aged 6 to 17 Years," researchers reviewed data provided by parents and guardians on mental health and bullying in the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health, which included nearly 64,000 children.

In 2007, 15.2 percent of U.S. children were identified as bullies by a parent or guardian. Overall, children with mental health disorders were three times more likely to bully other children. A sub-analysis by type of mental health disorder found that children with a diagnosis of depression were three times more likely to bully, while a diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) was associated with a six fold increase in the odds of being identified as a bully.

"These findings highlight the importance of providing psychological support not only to victims of bullying, but to bullies as well," said study author Frances G. Turcotte-Benedict, MD, a Brown University master's of public health student and a fellow at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI."

"In order to create successful anti-bullying prevention and intervention programs, there certainly is a need for more research to understand the relationship more thoroughly, and especially, the risk profile of childhood bullies."

Quick Tips From One Handyman To Another | Marijuana for MRSA

Before removing wallpaper from a room as part of a home improvement project, be sure to determine what type of wallboard is underneath the paper. Generally, you will find either plaster or drywall. Drywall requires much more care when removing wallpaper, as it can be damaged by over-wetting or scraping.

Improving your home yourself in anyway can be a fun, rewarding experience, but this can also be a disaster. Before starting any projects, make sure you research what you?re doing first. Getting halfway through any home improvement project only to find you?re doing something wrong is a nightmare waiting to happen.

Have a clear picture in mind of the home improvements you want to accomplish. This will prevent disappointment if the project doesn?t turn out as you planned. Utilize lists, drawings and magazine articles for ideas on how to create the finished product that will be everything you want!

When you are making a home improvement that could affect the area around it, be sure to take proper care of the area. If you will be painting, it is a good idea to lay a tarp down to protect flooring and furniture from paint splatters and spills. Make sure to cover any surfaces that you do not want scratched or damaged.

Make your home feel like a home by adding a doormat. A lot of people tend to overlook the addition of a doormat in front of a door. It not only serves a purpose of making a home feel complete, but also serves to keep your floors clean. Putting out a doormat where people can wipe their feet will cut down the amount of time you spend cleaning your floors.

A basic handyman?s toolbox should contain the following things: hammer, nails, adjustable wrench, vice grips, one interchangeable head screwdriver, a set of Alan wrenches, 3 and 1/2 inch screws, a drill, glue or epoxy putty, a metal file and/or sandpaper, and a handyman belt. These essentials will get you through most basic jobs.

When doing interior painting in your home you need to get a good brand of painters tape. There are a lot of brands on the market but not all do the jobs they profess to be able to do. You need to read reviews about the tape before using it in your home because paint bleeding onto molding can be very irritating and a pain to fix.

If you want to enhance the look of the rooms in your home with decorative items, first consider adding crown molding or applying a fresh coat of paint to the walls. Crown molding can add a little something extra to the room and make it look more finished and elegant. If your ceilings are quite low, this may not be a good option however.

If you live in an older home with a wooden floor that is beyond sanding and staining, add a few coats of oil-based paint over the planks. Choose a paint that is intended for outdoor use on decks or porches; this ensures that it will be able to withstand the occasional wet spill and light traffic. It can also hold you over until you have the resources to replace the floor altogether.

An easy, quick way to update your house with some home improvements is to start with your cabinet hardware. Whether you choose to update your bathroom or kitchen, changing the cupboard knobs, drawer pulls, and hinges can instantly change the look of the whole room.

Perpetually closed doors can make a hallway or corridor appear uninviting and uncomfortably narrow. Replace your solid door with a French door, which has a series of clear glass panels framed by wood. If you are concerned with privacy, opt for translucent glass or an adhesive to give the glass a ?frosted? look. Home Depot and Lowe?s carry adhesive window films for under twenty dollars.

When you are starting a home improvement project, make sure you realize all the steps entailed. Make a step by step list of tasks you need to complete to finish the project so you understand and are ready for all the work ahead of you. Also, plan the completion date a week after you think you will be done with the project to give yourself time to correct any mistakes.

The canny homeowner pays for quality, not name recognition when buying home improvement materials. Many expensive fixtures and fittings cost so much because they have recognizable brand names and fancy styling. Other fixtures are expensive because they are exceptionally durable and well-made. Learning to spot the difference and spending money on the latter is the way to get the most out of a home improvement budget.

Another good home improvement tip to add some flavor to your home is to take that plain painted ceiling and add some popcorn paint onto it. This will make it stand out a bit more, and make it less plain. Also, doing this is also very light on the wallet, which is perfect for these times.

As stated before in the article above, home improvement is the process of making changes, such as repair and renovation, to homes. Using the tips in this article, you should be able to tackle any home improvement project no matter the size of the task.

The Brotherhood Of Web Development And Web Designing

Miscellaneous Written by Anonymous ??Friday, 19 October 2012 06:05 On a broad scale, web development includes the process of web designing, as the development of a website will include the process of designing. But the skills that a professional needs for web development jobs are different than those for web designing work. Still we will say that it is a brotherhod of professionals as one cannot live without the other.

Like in a brotherhood, every member will have a defined role in the organization, so does every person in a web development organization. There will be developers as well as designers who will be skill-ready for professional work in their own domains. Like in a Venn diagram these domains may overlap at some functions but majorly remain different. They need to maintain an understanding of each other???s capabilities as well as roles.
The creativity and artistic streaks need to be showed in produced designs by a good web designer. The creative streak needs to be individualistic but the integration of the designs needs to be possible, and the designs should be attractive as well as productive. Then the role of a web development professional starts, the logic of these designs and integration into the website development procedure. The production and maintenance of the website will involve web development skills.

Very similar to human brain the web development and web designing are the two sides which together form a good website development organization. They need to work together with synchronization and understanding so as to reduce the work load and increase the throughput of the organization. If there is some communication gap or misunderstanding between the two teams then the resultant product will have a bad design as well as bad functionality.
The term web designing is generally given to the design process relating to the front-end (client side) design of a website including writing mark up, and this is the grey area which causes troubles in the brotherhood. As it is the responsibility of both the web designing and web development teams. The back-end (user side) is solely handled by the developer and the work is generally not seen by the client other than the functionality which the user will feel and observe.
The look is governed by the designer whereas the feel is governed by the developer. The user???s interaction while observing the graphics, images, designs, etc. is affected by the skill level of the web designing which has been done on the website. Whereas the client???s experience with the features, working, user-experience, etc. will be governed by the development teams skills. When both of them work in unity, they produce marvels which are a delight to the user as well as the client, to the customers as well as the customers of the customer.
In the world of website development, all the members need to work efficiently in order to bring smiles to the internet users. Brotherhood of web designers and developers has been united since the dawn of web services and will remain so till the internet survives.
