What I think is a convincing argument as to why the Drury ...

Post-homework dominance and post-lengthy amounts of time spent mucking around with my new music obsession, Spotify, I?m writing this late on a Monday night as my time on duty wanes down. Such is the life of a Drury RA- our duty nights are typically spent dabbling in mindless indulgences and completing minimal schoolwork. I have one hour left before I?m able to quite literally dive into Superbed (my coveted king-sized dormitory sleeping mechanism), and I?ve decided to spend it promoting my biggest on-campus supporter, the Drury Department of Communications. I?ve tried to sprinkle in some wit and glamor, so even the poor souls currently suffering through Organic Chemistry or hopelessly scratching their heads over Accounting can potentially benefit from this post. Read on!

WHY I?M IN THE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
For starters, I guess the cat?s out of the bag: I like communicating with people. Growing up, I always knew that a few communication-related things were my fort?: writing and correct use of grammar (as seen on here, hopefully); organization (seriously, it?s scary... I have a special bowl just for post-it notes); and an affinity for all most things media-related. Armed with these three tiny merits, I officially became an Advertising and Public Relations major my sophomore year. In retrospect, I think I could have done well in Integrated Media, but I think I?ll fend well in the advertising world, especially if I end up working as a social media representative for a local business or even several local businesses. That?s my dream job; that, and continuing to blog. I like doing this stuff.

Side-note: I?ve also claimed two excellent Drury minors, Psychology and Writing, in addition to my Global Studies minor. Somehow, the gods of time management have blessed me, and I?ll graduate within the four-year mark.

HOW THE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT HAS HELPED ME (AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOU, TOO)

One thing I noticed immediately about the Department of Communications is that the professors within it are incredibly conscious of the intimidating things students will encounter throughout their time at college and beyond. I?ve gradually overcome my worries about acquiring a great r?sum?, obtaining an internship, learning relevant skills (attention employers: I?ve got Dreamweaver and InDesign under my belt now!), not passing out before job interviews, and eventually getting a grown-up job out in the big bad world. I wouldn?t have been able to master those fears without excellent advisers and professors that have a genuine interest in helping to direct their students into a professional and goal-oriented mindset.

To further clarify this point, here?s a basic list of the things I?ve encountered because of the Department of Communications that have helped prepare me for the real world:

- Extreme networking (I got an internship out of that, thank you very much!)
- More r?sum? critiques than anyone can shake a stick at, in class and out of class, by professors, area professionals, and the Career Center
- Conferences related to my major (I attended the Southwest Missouri PRSA conference a few weeks ago and I had a great time, learned a lot of relevant things, met a lot of people, and had excellent chips and salsa for lunch)
- Public speaking skills (before you suppress a scream and hurriedly exit out of this page, read the next section)

THINGS THAT GO ON IN THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS THAT ARE SCARIER THAN THE THOUGHT OF A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE BUT ARE TYPICALLY NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS

A lot of people tend to avoid the Department of Communications because of public speaking alone. Naturally the thought crosses the minds of every person who reads the perquisite courses for the communications minor: Oh, crud, it requires public speaking. No thanks. Medieval and Renaissance Studies minor it is! Some people over-anticipate how difficult public speaking is. It?s not like you?ll go mad and start barking or foaming at the mouth when your turn to give your presentation comes. You?ll be fine and you?ll appreciate what you learned; trust me. Public speaking can be scary, but it?s so relevant to most careers out there that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by taking a basic course. Plus, it?s good to be in a class full of people who are equally as nervous as you are. There will never be a better time to learn public speaking than with a room full of people just like you.

The other thing people tend to avoid if they?ve heard of it is the dreaded Foundations of Communication course. Yes, that course challenged me. No, I probably wouldn?t take it ever again even if someone offered to pay me. But did I learn from it and push myself harder than I ever have before? You bet your bottom dollar I did. Some call it the Organic Chemistry of the communications department, but we wouldn?t be Drury students if we didn?t do things that challenged us. It?s one of those vital courses a student needs to get the bigger picture of communication and it?s more or less true to its name as a foundation to the minor or major. Plus, everyone knows the really fun stuff doesn?t start happening until 300 or 400 level courses.

WHAT YOU, AS THE READER OF THIS POST AND POSSIBLY A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A STUDENT IN THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS, SHOULD DO

Per my special recommendation, all Drury students ought to consider having at least a communications minor. I hate to beat on the same drum every other oldster beats on, but if I can handle a pseudo-double major and three minors, you can pick it up as well and learn the tools that will help you someday impress the heck out of your employers (therefore, the I'm-too-busy excuse isn't legitimate!). After all, I?m pretty convinced I?m armed and ready for that no-man?s land they call the real world, and I can?t necessarily say the same for my peers who aren?t in my department. So what if the Department of Communications is challenging at times? In my opinion, those challenges are the most rewarding of all. Take it from an overly-cynical junior who?s been around the block with college.

I'm sure you're convinced and getting ready to burst into Bay Hall to join the department, but stay tuned in to my blog for an upcoming post on how to pick the right college courses. As someone who unknowingly took Expository Writing for no reason at all, I consider myself a relatively credible source on the issue.
