King Richard III's grave ? a tantalizing find

The search for the long-lost remains of King Richard III in Leicester, England, has turned up traces of what may be the church where the slain monarch was buried.

Leicester University archaeologists announced Friday that their excavations in a city council parking lot have turned up medieval window tracery, glazed floor tile fragments and medieval roof tile. The high-quality materials suggest that the team is indeed digging around the Greyfriars church, where Richard III is said to be buried.

"Today, what we are saying is that we have found the Greyfriars and have uncovered tantalizing clues as to the location of the church," Richard Buckley, who co-directs the University of Leicester Archaeological Services, said in a statement. "It has gone about as well as we could hope for."

Richard III was King of England from 1483 to 1485. He died during the Battle of Bosworth Field during the War of the Roses, an English civil war between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. Richard III was the last English king to die in battle. Shakespeare penned "Richard III," a play about the tragic king, about 100 years later.

After his death, Richard III was buried at the Franciscan Friary in Leicester, known as Greyfriars. But the grave ? and the church itself ? were eventually forgotten.

Interest in the infamous king meant various tales sprouted up about where his grave was located, with some far-fetched grave tales including the idea the bones were thrown into the river Soar.

"Other fables, equally discredited, claimed that his coffin was used as a horse-trough," Philippa Langley, a Richard III Society member, said in a statement. [ Gallery: Digging for King Richard III ]

University of Leicester archaeologists suspected, in reality, that the Leicester City Council parking lot might cover the medieval site, and used ground-penetrating radar to pinpoint the best spots to dig.

In the first week of excavations, the team dug two 98-foot (30-meter) trenches and found what they believe may be segments of the Greyfriars cloisters walk and a section of church wall. They next plan to dig a trench that will intersect with the church itself.

Finding Richard III's body is still a "long shot," Buckley said. If he is found, the dead king will be reinterred inside the Leicester Cathedral. If not, Buckley said, the excavation is still an exciting find.

"(T)he archaeological work we have done so far is revealing more about the archaeology of the Greyfriars area than we ever knew before," Buckley said. "In that respect, whatever the outcome ? whether we find Richard or not ? this work is an advance in terms of helping us tell the story of the city of Leicester."

The dig is the subject of a BBC Channel 4 documentary that will air later this year.

Different Treatment Approaches To Stimulant Drug Addiction

Addiction to cocaine is a complex illness to treat and cure. It has short-term and long-term biological and psychological effects. The treatment plan should treat both symptoms in order to have an optimal recovery.

Detoxification

According to MedFaq, cocaine is a water soluble substance so it is easy for the body to process it the moment it is ingested. For this reason, the detoxification process of cocaine is more on psychological rather than physical. The patient could still undergo withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and depression. Treatment centers include detoxification in the process of recovery with constant monitoring and safety checks. The length of the process depends upon how long the patient used the drug.

Pharmacotherapy

The medication that will help treat cocaine addiction is still under study. However, there are certain medications that could help relieve the painful symptoms of withdrawal. Antidepressants like Desipramine help relieve anxiety and depression. Benzodiazepines such as Diazepam also relieve anxiety. Amantadine is a medication for the treatment of Parkinson's disease help reduce cocaine cravings.

Behavioral Treatments

Behavioral interventions aim to help the addicts build healthier habits and lifestyle by changing his attitude towards cocaine abuse. They are taught of strategies to avoid triggers and how to cope with stress and challenging temptations. Treatment centers use this approach through counseling.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy changes the mindset of the addicts toward the drugs thus producing new sets of behaviors and lifestyle. In this approach, the patients identify the people, situations, events and other triggers associated with drug use and help them how to avoid this triggers through helpful coping strategies.

Counseling

Guilt and shame felt by the patients due to their drug abuse is the most difficult part of recovery. Patients may feel that the effects of their addiction is too much to forgive and they have broken the hearts of their loved-ones. Certified counselors assist the addicts to forgive themselves and start a new life away from drug abuse. A trusted clergyman in an outpatient treatment center could also help an addict who is not in a residential or inpatient rehab.

12-step Programs

12-step programs help the addict remain sober after undergoing treatment programs. The goal of the 12-step program is to help the addicts forgive themselves, accept responsibilities for their behaviors and build broken relationships. Cocaine Anonymous and Narcotic Anonymous are the common self-help groups that could assist you in your recovery. The recovering addicts could find encouragement and support through fellow addicts who are striving hard to remain drug-free.

UMass Football Ready For Division I-A Adventure

For decades, the state university administrators contemplated a bold move in the athletic department.

There was an undercurrent of support to upgrade the football program to Division I-A, but something always deterred the shift. If it wasn't the lack of a stadium, it was the inability to secure funding or the absence of a conference affiliation.

Finally, the old Yankee Conference program took the plunge.

A decade ago, that was UConn's story. On Thursday night, the Huskies' neighbors to the north will begin following the same path.

UMass, long a candidate for big-time college football, will play its first game as a Football Bowl Subdivision program when it visits UConn at Rentschler Field. Administrators in Amherst talked for years about expanding football, but it never quite worked until now.

"The moon and sun kind of aligned," said UMass athletic director John McCutcheon.

There was an opportunity to join the Mid-American Conference and the school got funding for upgrades to on-campus facilities, but the most significant development was the sudden availability of a stadium.

The Kraft Group offered Gillette Stadium as a rent-free home, providing UMass with an NFL facility. Without Gillette Stadium, the program would not be making the shift because the cost of constructing a stadium would have been prohibitive.

And that's where the comparison to UConn's story ends.

"Their situation was a bit different," McCutcheon said. "UConn had a fairly significant influx of capital dollars for a facility that we obviously didn't have. So there are some things that look similar, but some important things that are quite a bit different."

Still, there is much to learn from UConn's journey. McCutcheon said he consulted with former UConn AD Lew Perkins, learning what to do and what not to do.

UMass officials learned from UConn that an on-campus facility was important for operating the program and as a recruiting tool, so office space and a training venue are being constructed and will be ready in 2014. They also learned about widening a recruiting base, following Randy Edsall's approach of starting local and spreading year after year.

Beyond the details, though, UConn provides inspiration for UMass.

"I think everybody looks at UConn and said, 'If they can do it, why can't we?'" UMass coach Charley Molnar said. "And I think that's a fair assessment, I think that's a fair statement."

Gillette Stadium in Foxborough is about 95 miles from the UMass campus, so the plan is to bus students to home games and ultimately change the culture of the student body. UConn faced the same challenge on a significantly smaller scale, building Rentschler Field about 25 miles from the Storrs campus.

"The opportunity at Gillette has a great many positives, but it does present some unique challenges as well," McCutcheon said. "We'll have to build [the student following] a little bit. They're used to coming out of the dorms and walking 200 yards to a game. It's going to be a little different, but we think that if we can develop that culture and if it's more of an event, it will be a little bit of a different deal for them and they'll want to go."

UMass has played New Hampshire at Gillette Stadium for the past few years and the school sent 26 busloads of students to the games. McCutcheon also says that more than 100,000 UMass alumni live within a 30-mile drive to Foxborough, so there is a potential fan base in eastern Massachusetts. The Worcester area also is loaded with UMass alumni.

And even though Greater Boston is historically a region that cares only about professional sports, McCutcheon said that UMass football can draw interest.

"We think we have a great product that's going to be affordable in a world-class venue, with free parking, that will be attractive to your average sports fan or a family that just wants to have great entertainment value," he said.

Part of the challenge is to raise awareness throughout the region, and that's where Molnar is important. He has been in the community, selling his program to anyone who will listen.

The New Jersey native was Notre Dame's offensive coordinator under Brian Kelly when the UMass job became available after former coach Kevin Morris was fired last year. It's Molnar's first head coaching job after 28 years as an assistant, including six under Kelly at Central Michigan, Cincinnati and Notre Dame.

"It's been a long time coming," Molnar said. "I've wanted to be a head coach for a long time. I bided my time and waited for the right situation. There's no doubt about it, this is the right place for me at this time."

Molnar, 51, might not be from New England, but he grew up in the world of Eastern football and believes that the region is ripe for a college football revival. So he talks about nurturing rivalries with Boston College and UConn, an old Yankee Conference foe.

"He's got a fantastic background with his experience," McCutcheon said. "The other thing that factored into [hiring him] for me is that he expressed a passion for Eastern football and he wanted to be part of being able to build a Division I-A level football program in the East and be part of that and put his mark on that."

Just as Edsall helped shepherd UConn into Division I-A as a first-time head coach, Molnar will debut as a head man with a program in transition. UConn was 5-17 in its first two seasons in Division I-A, so UMass (5-6 last season) could be facing a climb. Its nonconference schedule includes Michigan, Vanderbilt and UConn.

But the players, Molnar says, are undaunted.

"It's like waking up in July and coming downstairs and finding out that it's Christmas," Molnar said. "One day these guys were I-AA players playing in a 17,000-seat stadium. The next day they wake up, they're I-A players and they're playing in Gillette Stadium [with], you know, 68,000. Things have really improved for these guys in a short period of time. I think that they've really embraced the transition."

Obama talks beer, money, and war in online chat session

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama tested his typing skills on Wednesday in an online chat with young people that covered the White House beer recipe, money in politics, and the war in Afghanistan.

Obama has been courting students' votes on a two-day tour of colleges in the battleground states of Iowa, Colorado and Virginia, and his campaign is eager to have him appeal to young people in venues like "reddit," where he held the Internet chat session.

A picture of the president sitting at a laptop and typing away during a campaign stop in Virginia was provided on the website as proof that it was indeed Obama taking people's questions.

During the chat, Obama said the country might need to consider amending the Constitution to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in the 2010 "Citizens United" case that allowed outside groups known as Super PACs to spend unlimited amounts of money on political campaigns.

"Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it)," he wrote. "Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight on the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change."

He also talked about the difficulty of sending soldiers to war and the importance his administration placed on space exploration -- an issue that matters especially to voters in the swing state of Florida.

Asked about a White House-brewed beer that has gained attention in recent weeks, Obama promised the recipe would be released.

"It will be out soon!" he typed. "I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty."

He also predicted what he would do at the end of the November 6 election, taking care to single out, again, the youth vote he is hoping will help propel him to victory over Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

"Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard - especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices," he said.

Asked about keeping balance in his life, Obama noted he was lucky not to have a commute and could make it home every night he was in town for an evening meal with his family.

"Speaking of balance, though, I need to get going so I'm back in DC in time for dinner," he wrote at the end of the chat.

"But I want to thank everybody at reddit for participating - this is an example of how technology and the internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run."

Tymoshenko loses appeal, stays in Ukraine jail

A Ukrainian high court rejected an appeal on Wednesday by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko against her conviction for abuse of office, leaving her in jail and Ukraine's relations with the West severely strained.

Tymoshenko's defense lawyer said the ruling by a three-judge panel had been steered by President Viktor Yanukovich for political reasons.

"These findings have no relation to justice," Serhiy Vlasenko told journalists after judge Olexander Yelfimov ruled that lower courts had delivered "correct decisions on the crimes of Tymoshenko."

"This is a decision of Yanukovich to keep Tymoshenko in prison," Vlasenko said.

Western leaders condemned the seven-year prison term meted out to the 51-year-old opposition leader in October as political persecution, and blocked strategic agreements on political association and a free-trade zone with the European Union.

But despite months of chiding by the European Union and the United States, Yanukovich has refused to act to secure her release. No one had expected her to be released on Wednesday.

Yanukovich did not immediately react to Vlasenko's comments, though in tough remarks last Friday he said he would not negotiate integration with the European Union at the price of allowing it to interfere in her case.

Story: Ukraine prosecutor urges court to uphold Tymoshenko guilt

In Brussels, the European Union urged Ukraine to reform its judicial system "to redress the effects of selective justice" like that seen in Tymoshenko's case.

"We stress the importance for the Ukrainian authorities to take concrete steps to address the systemic problems of the judiciary," Michael Mann, a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, said.

Tymoshenko, recognizable for her peasant-style hair braid and known for fiery rhetoric, was not in court because of persistent back trouble which has kept her confined to a state-run hospital in eastern Ukraine.

About 300 of her supporters gathered outside the courtroom, chanting slogans such as "Yulia - Freedom!" and "Keep convicts inside and get Yulia out!" They lowered a mock coffin into the ground outside the courtroom to symbolize the death of justice.

The continued incarceration of Tymoshenko - by far the most vibrant opposition figure on Ukraine's political landscape - is certain to figure as a major issue in an October 28 legislative election.

Yanukovich's Party of the Regions goes into that election with the government highly unpopular over reforms that have increased taxes on small businesses and raised retirement ages, and it will have to work hard to retain its majority.

The abuse of office conviction relates to a gas deal that Tymoshenko brokered with Russia in 2009 when she was prime minister. The Yanukovich government says the agreement was reckless and saddled Ukraine with an enormous price for strategic supplies of gas which is taking a toll on the stressed economy.

'Shameful'
Tymoshenko has denied betraying the national interest, with her lawyers arguing that the gas negotiation with Russia was a political act which did not amount to a criminal action.

Ukrainian state prosecutors said Tymoshenko's guilt was clearly established at her trial last year.

In Wednesday's judgment, the three-member panel said: "The judges of the court have reached the conclusion that the appeal cannot be satisfied ... The judges believe that the previous courts reached correct decisions on the crimes of Tymoshenko."

Tymoshenko's daughter Yevgenia, who has sought international support for her mother's cause, told journalists: "Today we again received a shameful decision which proves that a dictatorship is establishing itself in Ukraine."

She said the ruling would be the basis for a fresh appeal to the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

The authorities have ignored Western criticism and piled up fresh charges against Tymoshenko for alleged past misdeeds.

In a separate trial, which has been adjourned several times because of Tymoshenko's ill health, she is accused of embezzlement and tax evasion going back to alleged offences when she was in business in the 1990s.

Lawyers for Tymoshenko pressed her case at the ECHR on Tuesday, arguing that her pre-trial detention had been unlawful and that she had been subjected to degrading treatment in prison.

The former prime minister was a leader of the 2004 Orange Revolution protests against sleaze and cronyism in Ukraine that derailed Yanukovich's first bid for the presidency.

She served two terms as prime minister under President Viktor Yushchenko, but the two fell out and their partnership dissolved into bickering and infighting.

She narrowly lost to Yanukovich in a run-off for the presidency in February 2010 after a bitter campaign.

'Jersey Shore': Washed up after the coming season

NEW YORK (AP) ? MTV gave the last call for "Jersey Shore" on Thursday, saying the raucous reality show will conclude after its upcoming sixth season, which begins Oct. 4.

The series, whose roots lay in a party house in Seaside Heights, N.J., has given rise to stars such as Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, just two from a cast of characters who were over-tanned, over-loud and always pumped up. It popularized the terms "guido" and "guidette" and the mantra "Gym, tan, laundry" while trying the patience of local residents with its party-hearty antics.

"Jersey Shore" became a pop-culture sensation and one of MTV's biggest hits with its premiere in December 2009. It drew as many as 8 million viewers while spawning the spinoffs "Snooki & JWoww" and "The Pauly D Project." But ratings have eroded in recent seasons.

The show strayed from Jersey during its run. In Season 2, the housemates fled winter for Miami Beach. The fourth season took them to Italy.

But you could never take the Jersey out of "Jersey Shore" ? or at least a certain Jersey stereotype the show made sport of riotously.

Meanwhile, certain Jersey locals made no secret of their disdain for the show.

Two years ago, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called it "negative for New Jersey," telling a TV interviewer the show "takes a bunch of New Yorkers, drops them at the Jersey Shore and tries to make America feel like this is New Jersey."

Most of the cast members are from New York.

But all that really mattered was, every one of them was from "Jersey Shore," and as such, kept themselves defiantly in the public eye. (Just this past Sunday, Snooki grabbed headlines with the birth of her first child.)

On Sept. 6, MTV will launch its season-spanning cavalcade of farewell "Jersey" fare with a retrospective special, "Gym, Tan, Look Back." The party isn't over yet.

Good News For VA Loan Benefits - Harris Kelly 67's blog

President Obama signed The Honoring America?s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act (H.R. 1627) on August 6, 2012. This act, intended to help those sickened by water at Camp Lejeune, includes improvements to VA home loan benefits available through the VA Home Loan Guaranty Program.

A portion of the new law makes VA loans available to more surviving spouses, provides easier funding fee waivers for disabled vets and helps single and dual-duty parents with occupancy hurdles.? Additionally, and at long last, VA loan limits of $1 million are again possible in high-cost areas. Here is a summary of the changes to VA home loan benefits now in effect:

More VA Loan Eligibility for Military Widows

Before the Bill, military widows became eligible for VA loans only they survived a spouse who died while serving or from a service-connected disability.? Now, a surviving spouse may be eligible for VA loans if the veteran had been rated totally disabled for a period of time specified under the new law, and eligible for VA disability compensation at the time of death.

?Dependents Allowed to Fulfill Occupancy Rule

VA loans are intended to finance veterans? homes as primary residences. Borrowers must meet VA owner-occupancy rules to qualify for the federally-backed mortgage program. Sometimes, single parents and dual-active couples could not meet this requirement.? Under the new law, a dependent of active duty member(s) can live in the home financed with a VA loan in place of the ?owner occupant? as long as a dependant?s legal guardian or attorney-in-fact certifies intent.

ARMs and Hybrid ARMs Still VA Loan Offering

Adjustable Rate Mortgages or ARMs can be a great way for borrowers to get an interest rate below the national average for a short time.? Homeowners who plan to move within three years are particularly attracted to ARMs.? This can include military members who often get relocated.? VA ARMs and Hybrid ARMs were about to expire at the end of 2012 due to old legislation.? But, as a result of the latest omnibus bill to improve veterans benefits, ARMs and Hybrid ARMs have become a permanent part of the VA home loan program. Qualified VA borrowers can continue to get these loans from VA-approved lenders that offer them.

Funding Fee Waivers Awarded with Pre-Discharge Disability Rating?

The VA funding fee is required for most VA loans. However, certain borrowers such as disabled vets and surviving spouses can receive fee waivers after receiving proper documentation from the VA.? The new law makes it easier for disabled veterans to now use qualifying pre-discharge disability ratings or memorandum ratings to get VA funding fee waivers. This can eliminate the need for certain veterans to apply for funding fee refunds because they don?t have proper waiver documentation at the time of loan closing.

$1 Million VA Loan Limits ? They?re Back! ??

The Veterans Benefits Improvement Act of 2008 signed by President Bush raised VA loan limits allowed for up to $1 million dollar VA-backed mortgages in some expensive housing markets.? Because Congress never approved the bill to extend the higher limits for 2012, the VA had to recalculate its loan limits.? As a result, a $625,500 loan was the most the VA would guarantee in neighborhoods within the 48 states ? including high-cost military towns like Prince William, Virginia or Aspen, Colorado. The H.R. 1627 law brings the higher limits back, up to over $1 million in the priciest areas, through 2014.

Do-It-Yourself Airports Could Turn Travel Around ... - Business Insider

Here's another possible upside to do-it-yourself airports: Disabled people will begin to like traveling again.?

We recently wrote that airports are replacing humans with robots in an effort to streamline check-in processes.?

Consumer advocates like Christopher Elliott have said "there's not enough automation" and that the self-check kiosks are a good thing for travelers' sanity (and their wallets).?But smelling a job-killer, airline-employee unions have argued that it's the last thing fliers want.?

"Clearly, it's not something passengers are clamoring for," Frank Larkin, a spokesman for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers, told the Journal.?"More technology, fewer people? I don't think so."

Too bad he's in the minority. There are plenty of inefficiencies with manned check-ins, one of them being that disabled people have a ridiculously hard time boarding planes.?

According to CNN, their?frustrations run the gamut from having wheelchairs damaged to missing flight connections and losing access to airplane restrooms. One disabled man said he was stranded on the tarmac.?

So how will DIY airports change the game? Brett Snyder, president of Cranky Concierge and blogger at The Cranky Flier, believes agents will be less distracted if they're not dealing with minutiae like changing seats and checking bags for regular travelers.?

"For self-boarding, it just frees up agents to be able to do more important work," he said over email.?

And it won't kill many jobs.?

"Some will say (self-boarding) will simply reduce staffing further, but with many gates already staffed by only one person, it would be hard to reduce by a ton," Snyder said.?

So things won't be fully automated, just enough to make life easier.

As Elliott pointed out, "there will always be passengers who need a human touch. So maybe folks who can't use a computer or who have some trouble with a bar scanner."?

Or people who are bound to a wheelchair or are visually impaired.?

Whoever these disabled people are, it'll be nice to know they're finally getting the attention they deserve.?

Edwards refutes rumors of move to Penske Racing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Carl Edwards dismissed a rumor Wednesday that he will join Penske Racing next season.

Edwards brought the rumor up unprompted during a national teleconference in an effort to silence the discussion. He is in the first year of a new contract with Roush Fenway Racing, but there has been speculation he is trying to negotiate an out to take the opening at Penske.

"There's been a lot of talk about me driving the 22 car, that's impossible," Edwards said. "First of all, I haven't discussed that with anyone ever. And, (number) two, I am contracted to drive the 99 car."

Edwards said he felt he should address the rumor because sponsors have heard the talk and have asked the driver his plans.

Edwards went through lengthy contract negotiations last season with Roush and decided in August to stay with the No. 99 team. He ended the year tied with Tony Stewart in the championship race, but lost the title on a tiebreaker.

This season has been a struggle. He's winless and in danger of not even qualifying for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. That is apparently fueled the speculation that he's got a performance clause in his Roush contract that would permit him to leave the organization.

With Penske Racing switching to Ford next season ? Edwards is a centerpiece of Ford's marketing campaign ? it's made sense that there could be interest in the No. 22 seat that opened when AJ Allmendinger was released after a failed drug test.

But, it's believed team owner Roger Penske is close to announcing a deal with Joey Logano. Penske said Saturday at Bristol that Logano is a candidate for the ride, and J.D. Gibbs admitted Logano is looking at other opportunities outside of Joe Gibbs Racing.

Health, Nutrition & Lifestyle - Colon Cancer

The large intestine is made up of the colon (the upper five to six feet) and the rectum (the last six to eight inches). This is where the last stage of digestion occurs and where solid waste is held until it is released. Colon cancer is second only to lung cancer among cancers that kill both men and women.

Mostly credited to an increase in screening for and removal of polyps, the incidence has been declining during the past decade.

Most colon cancers occur in people over fifty. It strikes men and women nearly equally. Colorectal cancer develops over a ten-to-fifteen-year period and produces no symptoms until it is advanced. If the disease is detected early enough and the tumour has not metastasized, the survival rate is quite high.

?

Causes and Risk Factors Of Colon Cancer

A genetic defect is linked with some forms of familial colon cancer. Other causes are not known. Risk factors associated with colorectal cancer include:?

  • Calcium deficiency
  • Colorectal polyps
  • Family history of colon cancer (Lynch syndrome)
  • Continued constipation and / or diarrhea
  • Personal history of colon-related diseases or uterine or ovarian cancer such as polyps, non-polyps colon cancer, or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Build-up of toxins in the colon
  • Possibly diabetes
  • A diet high in saturated animal fat and low in fiber;
  • High intake of charbroiled, burned, wood-smoked, or fried foods
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Cancer in another part of the body
  • Studies show that active people are not as likely to develop colon tumors as those who do not regularly engage in physical activity.

?

Signs and Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Symptoms of colon cancer can include the following:

  • rectal bleeding
  • Blood in the stool
  • Changes in bowel habits (persistant diarrhea, gas pains, and / or constipation)
  • Persistent abdominal pain or bloating
  • Anemia
  • Significant weight loss
  • Unusual paleness or fatigue
  • Ulcerative Colitis

?

Detection and Diagnosis Of Colon Cancer

Screening for colon cancer is the best way to detect polyps before they turn cancerous. During regular checkups (and annually after age forty), men and women should have a rectal exam. Beginning at age fifty, one of the following tests should be performed along with a rectal exam:

  1. Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) and flexible sigmoidoscopy (if normal, reeat the FOBT yearly and the flexible sigmoidoscopy at 5-year intervals).
  2. Colonoscopy (if normal, repeat at 10-year intervals).
  3. Double contrast barium enema or colon x-ray (if normal, repeat at 5 - 10 year intervals)

If you have a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, you should have a colonoscopy every one to two years. If you have a family history of colon cancer, you may have inherited a genteic mutation that can lead to polyps and or / cancers developing at an early age, even in the teenage years. Investigate any family history of colon cancer and discuss proper screening guidelines with your physician.

In addition, a test kit for detecting blood in the stool can be purchased at most pharmacies.?

?

Dietary and Nutritional Factors

?It was once believed that a high-fiber diet protects the colon by reducing the time any harmful carcinogens that are present in the stool are in contact with the intestinal wall.

There have since been conflicting reports on this, but most health professionals still recommend a high-fiber, low fat diet. A high-fat diet is strongly linked to colon cancer.

A Mediterranean diet is a well balanced diet which offers optimum dietary protection.? The traditional Mediterranean diet consists of fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, pulses, fish, seafood,? virgin olive oil, and red meat is eaten once a week.

Dreamstimefree_1908934

Cut out all refined sugar and refined grain products such as white bread, cakes, cookies, limited consumption of red meat, saturated fat and processed foods high in sugar and refined grained products such as cakes and cookies.

?Garlic, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, citrus fruits, melons, and dark green, red, and yellow vegetables are recommended for their antioxidant and sulfur compounds. Tomatoes may lower risk. Quercetin found in onions has been shown to have anticancer properties with respect to colon cancer. Probiotics found in yoghurt may also inhibit colon cancer. Goat's and or sheep's yoghurt is best for human consumption as it is most easily digested.

Consumption of chlorinated water has been linked to a greater incidence of colon cancer. It would be best to drink filtered water.

4 Big Credit Mistakes To Avoid. | How Important Is Your Finance

?

In today?s growing digital world, credit is becoming more and more common. In fact, many people swear by the convenience of credit. While the benefits of responsibly paying down a mortgage, car payments and credit cards are certainly well-known, the drawbacks of missed payments and the impact on your good credit score can be devastating. If you?re finding yourself in a position of financial distress, you may be at a loss as to how you can fix your situation. In times of panic, people often make these same mistakes thinking that they?re bound to erase the problem. Don?t get caught up in these banking blinders with your personal accounts.

Quitting Credit

While it may be tempting, giving up buying anything on credit altogether isn?t a very proactive plan. After all, credit history is an important asset to have in this society in order to get ahead. When the going gets tough, open the lines of communication with your service provider and work out a deal that can help you both reach an understanding. Many companies have hardship programs that can temporarily assist you without damaging your credit score, while still keeping lines of credit open.

Avoidance

Possibly the number one tactic by those who are panicked about their credit situation is to avoid the creditors and collections altogether. Most bad credit incidents will be stricken from your record in seven years, but that amount of time is a high price to pay and will negatively affect your financial dealings in the meantime. Always be aware of your credit report and what it says, instead of turning a blind eye to what could be relevant information to help your situation.

Hiring Scammers to ?Fix? The Problem

Credit repair companies often appeal to desperate people in an attempt to make money off of your misfortune. Consider the bottom line that if it was as easy to boost your credit score as these companies suggest, everyone would have fabulous credit. The truth about credit repair companies is that they are generally useless and expensive. The only way to get out of a bad financial situation is time and hard work, paired with determination.

Paying Credit off with Credit

As tempting as it is to use a credit card to pay off another credit card, this game will cost you money in the long run as it wastes your precious time. You effectively manage to charge yourself more in fees and interest by transferring these balances than you would if you paid off small amounts at a time.

When franchisees go to war with each other

Conflict in franchise relationships is generally considered to be that which occurs between franchisor and franchisee, but what happens when conflict breaks out between franchisees?

Although rare, conflict between franchisees does occur. This creates a unique management problem for franchisors, who are often damned if they get involved, and equally damned if they don't.

Whether franchisors like it or not, they will be seen as the umpire to resolve any problems between franchisees in a network, and often these problems are caused by issues that the franchisor either did not realistically foresee, or which come completely from left field.

For example, a franchisor recently told me about a disagreement between two franchisees following an awards presentation which resulted in fisticuffs and a surprise spectacle for the other franchisees present. Needless to say the awards will live long in the minds for all the wrong reasons of the people who attended.

Here is a brief outline of common causes of conflict between franchisees:

Inadequate performance

A chain is as strong as its weakest link, so all the strong links have an interest in the performance of the weakest link. While this usually amounts to some friendly advice and encouragement, such peer pressure can escalate unfavourably if the advice is continually ignored or the underperformance of one franchisee begins to cause specific problems for their colleague/s.

Nowhere is this more evident that in the upholding of basic standards of business operation, which the franchisor will generally be monitoring anyway.

However, if through their own carelessness or wilful disobedience of system standards a franchisee arouses the attention of the news media for endangering public safety (e.g. unhygienic operations that result in food poisoning, or vermin droppings in food, etc), then expect the other franchisees to begin sharpening their pitchforks in preparation for a lynching.

Not only are such breaches of health and hygiene requirements inexcusable if the franchisee is operating their business properly, they can generate such adverse publicity as to instantly impact on the financial performance of the businesses of other franchisees.

Through proper reporting and monitoring systems, franchisors should proactively assess the performance of all franchisees to ensure an early intervention if a decline in any element of performance creates risk for the network or adjacent franchisees.

Poaching

Where do franchisees get great staff? From other franchisees of course!

Employers can often feel possessive of their staff if they have trained them and created a highly-skilled and productive employee from raw human material. After investing the necessary organisational resources to create a high-performing employee from scratch, a franchisee is none-too-impressed if that valuable team member is then poached by a fellow franchisee who obtains the benefit of all that training and development.

An isolated incident of poaching may rankle, but multiple incidents involving the same franchisee are bound to lead to conflict, for which the franchisor is likely to be called upon to referee.

Poaching may be more likely to occur in some types of franchises than others, especially those that are highly sales or commission-driven (e.g. real estate), but can occur in almost any employing business model.

Encroachment

Franchisees taking customers or jobs from each other is often referred to as encroachment, and sometimes franchisors share responsibility for encroachment issues as a result of their policies (or lack thereof) in site or territory selection.

If, however, the policies are clearly defined and well-developed, and one franchisee continues to actively promote themselves in another franchisee's trading area, or actively draws customers away from their colleague, then franchisors should prepare for civil war within the network as either party seeks allies to support their cause.

Encroachment is probably the most common form of dispute between franchisees, particularly service businesses that rely on some kind of territory exclusivity.

If franchisors in such systems ever get their maps wrong and inadvertently grant overlapping territories (which I have seen happen), then not only is there the risk of civil war between the franchisees if or when this comes to light (no matter how small the area involved), the franchisor may also find themselves in strife for their careless management as well.

Unhealthy competition

Most franchise systems have some kind of awards program to recognise high achievers, though the criteria for how awards are granted may not always be transparent or publicised within the network. Consequently, one franchisee may envy the accolades given to another ? particularly if he or she believes they actually performed better ? and friendly rivalry may develop into something less-than-friendly (such as the fisticuffs example at the beginning of this article).

Inappropriate relations

Many organisations have guidelines dealing with interpersonal relationships between employees in the workplace, but rarely do such guidelines exist for relationships between franchisees.

So if, for example, one franchisee becomes a little too friendly with another franchisee's spouse or partner at a franchise conference or training workshop, expect that conflict between the franchisees may result. A franchise community is like any community. People will talk with each other and what happens "on-tour" may not actually stay "on-tour" for long.

Franchisors have little or no control over the potential for inappropriate relationships to occur between franchisees and, of course, should have staff codes of behaviour to ensure that no inappropriate relationships are formed between franchisees and franchisor personnel.

Managing conflict between franchisees

The best way to manage conflict between franchisees is to prevent it from happening in the first place. This will require a better management understanding of what makes franchisees tick as humans, not just business operators, and to structure support services accordingly.

At a practical level, if a franchisor team takes a genuine human interest in its franchisees, the causes of conflict above can be identified in advance before becoming problematic for the network.

In recognition of this, some systems seek to minimise conflict by increasing their own transparency, and by introducing practical measures such as improved crowd supervision at large-scale gatherings, closer monitoring of business performance, and discreet ego management.

Not all types of conflicts between franchisee can be foreseen or avoided, but acknowledging that it can occur and preparing accordingly will substantially reduce the potential for distraction and detriment in the network.

GOP delegates juggle schedules to deal with storm

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Tuesday's brunch with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and House Speaker John Boehner has been moved indoors. Schedules were rearranged to fill an open Monday evening. Sandbags were in place outside the hotel housing the 800-strong California delegation.

The threat of Tropical Storm Isaac left delegates to the Republican National Convention recalibrating Sunday but insistent that the show will go on with just a few modifications due to the weather. The GOP postponed most of Monday's lineup, cramming four days of events into three with hopes for a major send-off for Mitt Romney on Thursday.

"I think frankly Thursday night is going to be the big show ... and nobody can articulate Romney's message better than Romney," said Jim Poolman, vice chairman of the North Dakota GOP. "Wednesday will be important for Paul Ryan to introduce himself to (the country). And those two nights won't change."

Poolman arrived in the Tampa area Sunday afternoon and was settling in. He said if Monday's opening forum is abbreviated, he will likely stick around his Treasure Island hotel to get some work done.

A revised convention schedule shows a brief Monday session that Romney's chief convention planner said would last no more than five minutes.

Mitch Zak, media director of California's delegation, said a lot of events were being reorganized because of the storm.

A Monday breakfast with speakers such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman was moved to a new room inside the TradeWinds hotel on the water near Tampa. The brunch with Rice, Boehner and California Rep. Darrell Issa, was planned for an outside venue, but will now be held within the hotel.

"They're putting some sandbags up outside and we'll just have to wait and see, and hope Isaac is kind," Zak said, noting that 90 percent of his delegation has arrived.

"The staff and the organizers are focusing on the logistics," Zak said. "Everyone has arrived with a sense of energy. So we're all rolling with this."

The latest weather reports showed Isaac heading farther west of Tampa, but hurricane warnings were issued from the New Orleans area to the Florida Panhandle.

Zak saw no effect on the mood of the convention, or Romney's ability to get his message out.

"We're ready to blow the roofs off on Tuesday night," he said. "We're going to give him one hell of a send-off."

The inclement weather, if anything, will "demonstrate that the Republican Party is resilient and committed to America," Zak added.

Tom Del Beccaro, chairman of the California GOP, said the delay "will only result in some pent-up energy but otherwise won't affect us that much."

At least one delegate was concerned about the fast-changing schedule.

Shane Goettle, a North Dakota delegate who lost a GOP congressional primary earlier this year, said he was worried that some Republican Senate candidates would be bumped from the schedule, including his state's nominee, Rep. Rick Berg.

Indeed, the revised schedule released Sunday showed Berg was not among those who kept their speaking slots.

"As a delegate from North Dakota, I'd very much like to see him up there," Goettle said.

Goettle planned to attend a business meeting that has been moved to Tuesday. For the down times in between, he said, "it's an opportunity for our delegation to bond."

Michele M. Mustello and her sister, Marci, drove 18 to 20 hours from Butler, Pa., to Tampa and arrived Sunday.

Mustello said she'd play Monday by ear, depending on how the convention agenda has changed. But for now, none of the luncheons or mixers she planned to attend had been canceled.

Bless Their Hearts Mom: Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

Bless Their Hearts Mom: Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

I really should title this one, part TWO of my original review of my new Nexus 7 Tablet (can I get a shout out to Staples for having an excellent electronics department?), as now that I've had time to play with use it. Now that I've gotten alot of use of it, I wanted to share some of the really cool things that I LOVE about it.?

First, it has really make me MISS my Android phone intently! For those who have not used Android, it is much more intuitive and user friendly of a platform than iphone. Everything has been simplified to one step, versus the 3-4 of iphone. Ever try setting a song from your computer as a ringtone on iphone? 2 programs and 5 steps, versus move from computer to phone and set in Android. ?The Nexus 7 has the new Android Jellybean and it is uber fast, responsive and beyond easy to use!?

I'm going to show you some screen shots (which you can take by merely depressing the power and down volume buttons at the same time, the device clicks and see the small screenshot to make sure you captured what you wanted to) and show you what wonders are on this phone!

Starting when you turn on the phone, you can set a password lock or a facial recognition lock. I love the facial lock, but with other family members using the tablet, I opted for a password. It only takes a couple of seconds to enter, but it keeps strangers from accessing my data, when I'm in a public place!
nexus right screen
You can set your screensaver to how ever you want it, including your favorite picture. I've kept the recent entertainment (Google books, music and magazines) tab as a front cover, for now. After I really involved in the tablet, I will probably change them. When you slide the screen left, you get the second home screen (see above picture), with the Google Play recommendations. You can click to like the suggestion, or to remove it, and a new one will come up. Google takes this info and the next time you log on, offers more content for you.
nexus google now screen
Or you can open the Google Now cards, by simply swiping up from the bottom bar?and get your local weather, traffic, sports news, public transit and flight info (picture above)! Yup, all at one swipe! Perfect for getting what you need to know BEFORE you get dressed for the day! This is perfect for those who are always on the go for business!?

nexus apps screen
When you hit the app button, all your apps are shown (picture above). This makes it really quick to go to one of your apps, say Gallery (photos) or Game (say Mah-Jong), without having to put them on one of your home screens. They are all alphabetical, so it's quick to find them!
nexus notification bar screen

But say you downloaded an app, and want to open it, but you just got a call about an email you need to open? Up on the top bar on the left, you'll see small icons pop up as email comes in, you download an app, update an app, or publish say a post to Blogger (see picture above) . All you have to do to open one of them is to swipe the bar down, find the item you want and click it. Yup it's THAT simple to switch from an app to your email. Want to go back to the app? Repeat with the bar, OR you can go to the previous apps bottom 'go' button. And there are all your recent apps (picture below) ! You can scroll up and down and find the one you want. And BAMM, you can be back where you were before you went to check the email! Easy peasy!?

nexus recent apps screen
The Google voice search has been really amazing. It is a super time saver and I've found myself using the voice type command ALOT. Say you have a blog post idea, but are at the school waiting on your child's basketball practice to end. if you've got wifi access, all you have to do is start a post, click on the microphone on the keyboard, and start talking. Your text will appear, you can save the post, and later you can edit it at home and publish it. AND you can use the Google voice wherever you use a keyboard, including email and Facebook!?

otg cableWhile having no removable SD card gives the tablet some limitations. By buying a USB OTG (On The Go) cable (on the left, which allows you to connect ANY usb device to your tablet), and Stickmount and ES File Explorer apps (both free in Google Play store), you can transfer files back and forth from the tablet and any USB memory device, like a thumb drive or back up hard drive.?

You can also bluetooth files VERY easily. I've transferred numerous files back and forth to my laptop, with no problem! If you have a bluetooth printer, you can also send files to it, when you go to share. This has worked wonderfully so far! I also have a Brother computer label printer, and the tablet works great with it, and the Brother app, so I can print out labels in any room, and not be tied down to the computer! Can I get a woo-hoo?

The other items you will need for your tablet will be a screen cleaner or film cover, and a carrying case. Though I have found I'm still debating on type of case, but I definitely want something I can put into my purse easily. Regular headphones work great with the tablet as well, for covert listening, but I highly recommend stereo Android ones, for better sound.

Additionally, if you will be working off-line on business documents, then you need to download one of the office apps, so you have word type document makers, as the Google Drive is great, but only accessible with wi-fi. It really comes down to doing a little research to see what apps you should download for YOUR needs. And naturally there is some trial and error, to see which ones you prefer. Luckily most of them have free trials, or free apps, to save you money! When you purchase the Nexus 7, you do get $25 credit to the Google Play store, as soon as you set up your account! That was pretty cool to me, as it enabled me to download a genealogy app that work with my Legacy Family Tree program on my home computer. It is so easy now to take the tablet with me, and if a genealogy questions comes up, I can pull up my ENTIRE genealogy file!?

Seriously, I use my tablet around the house ALL the time- it is easier than lugging around the laptop, and easier to read than the smart phone. The iphone has been relegated to pretty much a phone and alarm clock. I only use the laptop for loading pictures into blog posts, or if I have to cut and paste alot of info (the tablet and I haven't quite worked out the clipboard to my satisfaction- it works, but I can never get clipboard to clear when I need it to, I know it's operator error, just need to figure out the right app to help!?

If you are a busy mom on the go, busy professional, or technology craver, then the Nexus 7 tablet is definitely for you! Check it out, you'll want your own too!

Despite Isaac's soaking, Keys residents laid back

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac barely stirred Florida Keys residents from their fabled nonchalance Sunday, while the Gulf Coast braced for the possibility that the sprawling storm will strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there.

It was on course to strike land on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a powerful storm that crippled New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and became a symbol of government ineptitude. Forecasters expected Isaac to pass the Keys late Sunday before turning northwest and striking as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for a large swath of the northern Gulf Coast from east of Morgan City, La. ? which includes the New Orleans area ? to Destin, Fla. A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph (154 to 177 kph).

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency and suggested that people begin leaving low-lying parts of the state. He also said he may skip a speaking engagement later this week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa unless the threat to his state subsides. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has also canceled his trip to the convention because of Isaac.

Elected leaders' vigilance toward tropical storms has heightened in the seven years since Katrina struck and became a symbol of government failure. More than 1,800 died, there were 53 levee breaches and the federal government was viewed as late and unprepared to handle the aftermath. Criticism was leveled at officials reaching all the way to the White House.

An emergency declaration was also issued in Mississippi by Gov. Phil Bryant amid concerns of storm surge threatening low-lying areas. Oil companies began evacuating workers from offshore oil rigs and cutting production in advance of Isaac.

The storm was on a course to pass west of Tampa, but it had already disrupted the Republicans' schedule there because of the likelihood of heavy rain and strong winds that extended more than 200 miles from its center.

Even before reaching hurricane strength, Isaac caused considerable inconvenience, with more than 550 flights canceled at Miami International Airport and about 150 from Fort Lauderdale's airport. There were scattered power outages from Key West to Fort Lauderdale affecting more than 16,000 customers, and flooding occurred in low-lying areas.

Gov. Rick Scott said at a news conference Sunday evening that only minor damage was reported from Isaac.

Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported as far north as Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. But while officials urged residents in southeast Florida to stay home, that recommendation was ignored by surfers and joggers on Miami Beach and shoppers at area malls.

In Key West, Emalyn Mercer rode her bike while decked out with a snorkel and mask, inflatable arm bands and a paddle, just for a laugh. She rode with Kelly Friend, who wore a wet suit, dive cap and lobster gloves.

"We're just going for a drink," Mercer said.

"With the ones that are brave enough like us," Friend added.

Along famed Duval Street, many stores, bars and restaurants closed, the cigar rollers and palm readers packed up, and just a handful of drinking holes remained open.

But people posed for pictures at the Southernmost Point, while at a marina Dave Harris and Robyn Roth took her dachshund for a walk and checked out boats rocking along the waterfront.

"Just a summer day in Key West," Harris said.

That kind of ho-hum attitude extended farther up the coast. Edwin Reeder swung by a gas station in Miami Shores ? not for fuel, but drinks and snacks.

"This isn't a storm," he said. "It's a rain storm."

With a laugh, Reeder said he has not stocked up aside from buying dog and cat food.

The forecast wasn't funny, however. Isaac was expected to draw significant strength from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but there remained much uncertainty about its path.

The Gulf Coast hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region. Florida, meanwhile, has been hurricane-free since it was struck four times each in 2004 and 2005.

Hurricane center forecasters are uncertain of the storm's path because two of their best computer models now track the storm on opposite sides of a broad cone. One model has Isaac going well west and the other well east. For the moment, the predicted track goes up the middle.

Florida Panhandle residents stocked up on water and gasoline, and at least one Pensacola store ran out of flashlight models and C and D batteries. Scott Reynolds, who lives near the water in Gulf Breeze, filled his car trunk with several cases of water, dozens of power bars and ramen noodles.

"Cigarettes ? I'm stocking up on those too," he said.

Forecasters stressed that the storm's exact location remained extremely uncertain ? a fact not lost on Tony Varnado as he cut sheets of plywood to board up his family's beach home on Pensacola Beach. With the storm's projected path creeping farther to the west, the Mandeville, La., resident joked he might be boarding up the wrong house.

"I'm going to head back that way as soon as we are done here to make sure we are prepared if hits there," he said.

Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for seven deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba. It bore down on the Keys two days after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused more than $25 billion in damage just north of the island chain.

In Tampa, convention officials said they would convene briefly on Monday, then recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm was expected to have passed. Scott canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

At Miami International Airport, more than 550 flights Sunday were canceled. Inside the American Airlines terminal, people craned for a look out of one of the doors as a particularly strong band of Isaac began lashing the airport with strong rain and high wind.

Michele Remillard said she was trying to get a seat on a flight to New Orleans, well aware the city could be affected by Isaac later this week. In coastal Plaquemines Parish, La., crews rushed to protect the levees that keep floodwaters from reaching that New Orleans suburb.

"It's a little scary," said Remillard, who was in town for a wedding. "But I need to get home, you know? And if the storm comes my way again, who knows, I might have to come back here."

As of 5 p.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of Key West, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had top sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph) and was moving to the northwest at 16 mph (26 kph).

Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles (335 km) from the center, meaning storm conditions are possible even in places not in Isaac's direct path.
