India, Pakistan agree to ease tensions in Kashmir

NEW DELHI (AP) -- An army official says India and Pakistan have agreed to ease tensions in disputed Kashmir after recent clashes there.

Indian army spokesman Col. Jagdeep Dahiya says the military commanders of the two sides spoke by telephone for 10 minutes on Wednesday and reached an understanding not to allow the situation to escalate.

Three Pakistani soldiers and two Indian soldiers have died in the past 10 days in the worst bout of fighting in the region in nearly 10 years. India says one of its soldiers was beheaded.

A series of tit-for-tat attacks had threatened to ratchet up tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
