A good smile comes from a good set of teeth and so does your health. Ever thought what bad oral health care may result into? Well, a host of bacterial dental hitches. And that?s not all ? poor oral hygiene may even result in a number of other disorders that are not related directly to your mouth. To give you a deeper insight, we spoke with dentist Pooja Jain to find out the effects of incomplete dental care on the overall health of the body. Curses That Poor Dental Hygiene Brings Upon You
Falling Breath
Bacteria and germs may possibly travel from your mouth to the lungs following the respiratory track, and create a great amount of inflammation. This inflammatory condition might even lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia.
Baby Doom
Studies at the University of Minnesota have shown that women with dental issues tend to take more time in conception than those with healthy gums and teeth. Further, it was also observed that pregnant dental patients tended to suffer from miscarriages more often.
Sick At Heart
There are chances that the bacteria from your mouth enter the bloodstream and make their way to the arteries in the heart, attach to the fatty plaques, and create inflammation creating the worst conditions like blockages and coronary artery diseases.
Vulnerable Diabetics
Diabetics are doomed to infections and slow healing. And a poor gum condition in case of a diabetic can even get worse ? it can lead to a poorer condition of periodontitis, as compared to people without diabetes. Such a condition makes it difficult to control sugar levels in diabetics.
Hitting The Memory
Researchers at the University of Arkansas believe that bacteria from the mouth can travel to the brain either through the bloodstream or the nerves that connect the jaw and develop a kind of plaque that is equivalent to the Alzheimer?s or dementia.
Personality Check
A mouth odour or dirty teeth can put forth the worst impression when you meet people. Poor oral health can affect your confidence and looks, resulting in behavioural and sleeping problems, both in adults and children.
Lack Of Nutrition
Well-chewed food gets easily digested deriving the maximum nutrients out of it. But with painful or diseased teeth, one may face difficulty chewing properly and may simply gulp down the food, resulting in indigestion.
Everyday Must Dos For Dental Fitness
- It?s not just important to brush your teeth twice a day, but what you must do is develop a habit of cleaning your tongue and cheeks from the inside as well.
- Floss first and then brush ? not vice versa.
- To reduce infection from gum diseases almost by half, gargle with mouthwash twice a day.
- Be gentle to your teeth ? always use a soft toothbrush.
Lastly, avoid smoking, as toxins in the smoke get absorbed by the walls of the mouth giving birth to various oral infections; in severe cases, they can result in mouth or oral cancer too.
