Recently, the website of Voice of America (VOA) suffered security breach. VOA is the external radio and television broadcast provider of the federal government of the United States (U.S) and is popular worldwide. Attackers allegedly breached the security apparatus and managed to deface the home page of the website. The home page of voanews.com was replaced by a banner displaying Iranian flag and an AK-47 rifle. The banner is associated with a group known as Iranian Cyber Army.
The group is known for breaching and defacing the website of Twitter. The group also made news last year by hijacking the Chinese search engine Baidu and redirecting users to the a page displaying banner of the group.
The group also breached ninety associated websites of VOA and listed them on the site. The attackers also displayed a message asking Hillary Clinton, the U.S Secretary of State to stop meddling in the affairs of Islamic countries and pay attention to the voice of oppressed nations. VOA provides broadcasting services in numerous languages from English to Kurdish to Tibetan and Mandarin to Macedonian and Thai to Indonesian and Vietnamese through radio, television and the Internet. The website also displays news stories in a wide range of languages. Cyber security professionals are investigating the security breach. Preliminary investigations have identified the attacks as a Domain Name System (DNS) attack aimed at redirecting the website. A spokesperson of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), which operates the website, has reported that the internal systems and servers have not been breached and data remains uncompromised.
Websites are targeted by political activists, cybercriminals and groups loyal to rival countries. Attackers exploit the vulnerabilities of websites to steal, modify or delete information. Attackers use a wide variety of techniques such as SQL injection, DNS, cross-site scripting and iframe injection to exploit vulnerabilities and infiltrate websites. Usually, ethical hacker certified professionals conduct security evaluation to identify and weed out security flaws on websites. Information and news disseminated by VOA reflects the foreign policies of the U.S government.
While some cyber security experts have expressed concerns that the group is backed by the Iranian government, investigators usually find it difficult to establish state involvement in cyber-attacks. Ironically, the attack comes at a time when Middle East and North African (MENA) countries are facing turmoil and instability. The attack also follows a recent decision by the BBG to cancel broadcasting of Chinese language service through shortwave radio and shift to Internet broadcasting.
IT security has become a top concern for governments worldwide. Constant intrusions and attacks have led to increase in demand for professionals qualified in IT security certifications. Cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure installations may not only jeopardize normal life, but also pose threat to national security. The vibrant and multitude of threats emanating from the cyber space requires prompt and deft action by security professionals. Working security professionals may take advantage of iPad training, e-learning programs and webinars to keep them abreast of the latest threats to IT security, improve their technical skills and strengthen the IT infrastructure of the organizations.
